I was shoveling my driveway and I was just thinking "Would the south won if they all had semi-automatic pistols, like a glock or colt or something, instead of single-fire muskets.?" I know it doesn't exactly fit in but its a "what-if" kinda question (User was banned for this post ("No-content thread" - Dragon))
Of course. It takes much longer to reload a single-fire black powder musket, muskets have god awful accuracy, and modern wapons are faster, more accurate, and easier to reload.
The north had Gatling guns back then as well. Doesn't really matter if you have a semi-automatic pistol if the other team has a machine gun. The north also had twice the army size.
if just the south had that then they'd probably win but that would be dumb
Well we'll never know for sure but if someone went and gave the south a shit-ton of very advanced technology I would place my money on them.
yeah i can see it now confederate soldiers rollin down the hood wit glocks pointed out drive by motherfucker
You should REALLY read this book. It's by Harry Turtledove who is proclaimed as "The Greatest Alternate History Writer of the World". In the book, [sp]White supremacist from South Africa travel back in time to give General Lee AK-47s, which he uses to win the war.[/sp] My favorite author, by the way.
I think OP wishes the south had won.
yeah i can see it now confederate soldiers rollin down the hood wit glocks pointed out drive by motherfucker
Laughed harder than I should have. The south probably would have won if Sherman hadn't fucked up Atlanta and Savannah
Haha, id like to see how big of a butterfly effect i could create if i gave 500 Ak's to the south. Id come back to the future and wed all be ruled by rednecks
It came down to more than just superior weaponry, the Confederates lacked any major railroads or cannon production facilities and without the railroads to move supplies to the front lines the Confederates found it very difficult to mobilise and maneuver effectively.
Read this. And every other book in the series. Damn ninjas! :ninja:
Yeah, well. I'm a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee :3: But to your question: We're never going to know, now are we?

I want that turtledove book now
north>south.
I want that turtledove book now
He also wrote a long fantasy series parodied off of World War II. But he did it very creatively, where "everything is reversed". [sp]The continent it all takes place in is in the southern hemisphere opposed to northern like reality. The east is more industrialized than the west. Instead of the "superior" race being blue eyed and blond haired, they're redheads with green eyes.[/sp] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Darkness_Series Oh, and here's the "Timeline 191" Series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline-191 Called "Timeline 191" because [sp]history in the book divulges from reality when Lee's Order No. 191 is successfully sent to his general, instead of falling into Union hands and used to win the Battle of Antietam which happened in reality.[/sp]
