The Voice star will.i.am admits he needs to use Auto-tune on his songs as his singing isn't good enough.
The Black Eye Peas rapper is working on his "singing abilities" after revealing he uses computer technology to improve his vocals.
While defending the process on Alan Carr's Chatty Man show, the sheepish star concedes he is trying to improve his own voice.
He says: "I use Auto-tune because I write and produce. A lot of the time I am in the studio by myself and no one works as much as I do. So the computer allows me to make music singing myself and not wait around for singers to come and sing it.
"It's a rare combination to have someone who can write songs and sing well.
"The computer allows me to execute my ideas at the speed I think them. So that's why I learnt to (use) Auto-tune. It's just an effect. But I am working on, you know, my singing abilities."
The rapper was also forced to defend his flagging TV talent show The Voice following weeks of criticism over everything from falling ratings to technical malfunctions.
He explains: "I checked Wikipedia once and it said I was one million years old, so you can't always believe what you read."
As if we needed him to admit it.

wait, what? there's so many things wrong with this. his lyrics are fucking terrible, wasting time writing terrible lyrics isn't an excuse for not having any singing talent either. what a fucking knobhead.
and a rare combination to have someone who can write songs and sing well? WHAT. look at any famous artist prior to like 2000 and they have at least some decent lyrics with decent singing capabilities unlike his shit
Typical [sub]c[/sub]rap artists, can't produce anything good. I think we can all agree that this is the one acceptable rap song.

There's plenty of brilliant rap, you're just not looking in the right places.

Besides, Will.I.Am doesn't even rap these days.
Why does he wants to be Stephen Hawking? Or anyone that uses auto-tune just because they think it's all cool.
Yeah, it is, but it being overused, only if it's used for funny reasons.
I would NEVER have considered will i am as rapper. No matter what this fag says,
his production skills are subpar his lyrics are horrible and his "singing"...
I love Will.i.am as a guy cause I think he's hilarious, but the stuff he does is average at best.
Old school shit like NWA and underground artists/groups like Immortal Technique and Jedi Mind Tricks are the the only acceptable rappers to listen to in my book. Fuck people like will.i.am, they ruin rap everyone.
The fact that he says he can write lyrics as if that's just common knowledge that he is a good writer is really insulting.
This guy pisses me off to no end.

There's a rap group called Jedi Mind Tricks?
Why hasn't anyone told me this before?

The early Black Eyed Peas shit (first two albums) was actually very good. And actually contained rapping.

Bears shit in the woods? Such a day for science.
And yes Will.i.am [sp](William for normal people)[/sp] Uses auto tune.
No fucking shit.
ITT facepunch finds out will.i.am is a terrible singer and a deluded egotist
I think there's too much negativity regarding autotune. It is usually due to the amount of RnB/pop artists that use it but there are plenty of electronic and rock ones that use it.
Vocoder didn't get this much stick, they're both vocal filters imo.

He doesn't really sing, there's a method of singing where you make autotune sound like how you want it to. It's a pretty unique technique so it's not all "it does it for you no effort".
Well.i.am shocked
I reckon it's just a new age of whining about vocal filters, except back then they just grooved and didn't care.

Is this really a news?
I thought everyone knew this.
Will seems to be doing more Voice acting work then singing

the amount of white-people in this post is making me physically ill
I find it sad that most kids who listen to his music (14-15) dont even know what auto-tune is.

if you found that sad then you might be heart broken to know that nobody cares about what plugin some artist happens to use.
ITS A MUSIC OPINION THREAD
OH FUCK NOOOOOooooo

Talkboxes work totally different. You basicly play the synth, which still takes skill (at least as much as
a synth solo would take) and modify the sound with your mouth. Its not even singing.
I got a talkbox myself, and to form words is actually harder than it sounds like, although youll get used to it.
Autotune however can turn everything that isnt completely fucked up into on-key singing. It doesnt
require musical talent, it requires technical knowledge, which is not what a musician should necessarily have.
It is selling a lie, because it sounds legit to the normal ear, vocoders and talkboxes on the other hand are obvious effects.

They're both vocal filters. Fair enough, not ALL artists that are autotuned are technically skilled in manipulating the filters and having artistic control.
However, there is a method of vocal technique to make the autotune sound like how you want.
Yes, it was originally designed for "pitch-fixing", but since then a lot of people have been using it to create a sound that they like. Regardless if a lot of people don't.
I don't listen to the music solely for the effort put in anyway, you can have the most technically skilled artist sound drab by having little to no personality in their recordings.
You haven't heard autotune until you have heard this:

It's only done for effect though.
holy shit I only just realized Will.i.am meant William
I thought it was some kind of statement about individuality or a reference to The Prisoner or something
this is now the 'post a song in which autotune is entirely irrelevant' thread
