Started reading this series awhile ago, and I'm having a hard time pulling myself away from them. You take Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Sam Spade or Dick Tracy, throw em all together and you kind of get the basic idea, except it's, you know...good. The premise seems kind of lame at first. You've got a hard-boiled Private Eye. Stereotype in every way. He's got the leather duster, the .38 Chief's special, wiseacre attitude and he lives in Chicago. Cliche in every way that matters, with one major difference. He's a freakin wizard. His enemies range from vampires to demons, from poltergeists to ancient gods. Author's name is Jim Butcher. If you're a reader, and looking for something different, you might dig this.
not my forte but if you were to elaborate a little more there could be some users on this forum that would be interested
This does not tell me annything about the writing style or overal subject of the books. Seems like a mix of Kratos, Indiana jones, Ghostbusters and Sherlock holmes?

I love The Dresden Files.
The books are written in first-person narrative, from the perspective of Harry Dresden (the wizard PI) He's constantly being dragged into the supernatural world, and the seemingly innocuous cases that the first few books have dealt with, end up with serious implications in later books. His circumstances are getting increasingly personal, and very dark, but I won't give any details, for fear of spoilers. There's only about 12 or so out at the moment, but Butcher plans on writing up to about 23 of them. He releases a new one on an annual basis.
Sounds like a good read.
When I read the title I thought this thread was going to be about some secret document concerning the bombing of the city of the same name during WW2.
Yeah I've been meaning to read the first one.
Storm Front (the first one) is a little on the dry side, but they keep getting more interesting as you go along, so don't get discouraged if you don't like the first.
It's like a snowball effect, Jim butcher seems to be getting better and better at writing.
@jimmg Yeah, that's exactly it. Have you read Changes yet? I just finished it on monday.
Storm Front (the first one) is a little on the dry side, but they keep getting more interesting as you go along, so don't get discouraged if you don't like the first.
I'm not sure if it is true or not, but I heard at one point that Butcher started writing Storm Front very early in his career as proof of how terrible formula writing is (where the writer has a set formula for every book he writes, but changes the details). From there, he decided he actually liked the book he was writing and rewrote it so it didn't completely suck. Considering he was supposedly still in college when he started this, I'm not surprised it would be the worst writing out of all his work. Comparing his latest books with Storm Front, you can see how much better he's gotten.
You might have something there. It really wasn't that great, but like a previous poster said...there's this snowball effect going on. He just keeps getting better as the series goes on. I absolutely love this book series now.
I just started the series, Jim Butcher is my dads favorite author and he recommended them to me, i'm currently reading "Summer Knight".
almost done death masks =D
Awesome book, looking forward to watching the TV series I bought today just for the lulz.
Sounds pretty good, may have to look into these some time.
I remember this thread from when it died originally.
