When Marnie Was There may be Studio Ghibli's final film, if rumours of the Japanese animation studio's imminent closure are true. The reports come from a Ghibli insider, who told Japanese website News Cafe (via Kotaku) that there have been changes afoot in the studio responsible for family favourites such as My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki retired last summer, after completing The Wind Rises. Earlier this year co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki stopped producing films and became Ghibli's general manager. Although the reports have been unconfirmed, the source told News Cafe that financial reasons made it likely that When Marnie Was There would be the Ghibli's final film before they just "manage the copyrights", or make money from, their older material.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/11001081/Studio-Ghibli-may-stop-making-films.html It's always sad to see great institutions like Studio Ghibli struggling. I do hope they can turn it around, but without Miyazaki I think they'll really struggle to bring back the magic.
Aw shit. They had great movies.
noooooo kickstart this instead of potato salad
Well at least they had a good run while it lasted right?
Please remain uncomfirmed, I do not want to see them gone
Make that Nausicaa sequel, then rest in peace.

It's probably more due to hayao miyazaki retiring than anything else.
It's probably more due to hayao miyazaki retiring than anything else.
IMO Miyazaki pretty much was Studio Ghibli. Not saying that there aren't a lot of other talented people working there but he is the reason it gain international success; When he retires I kind of think it is best Studio Ghibli die with him instead of falling into obscurity and mediocrity.
Make that Nausicaa sequel, then rest in peace.
Miyazaki doesn't make sequels. He tells the story and then it's told. If you liked Nausicaa, get your hands on the graphic novels. They're better than three Nausicaa movies could be.
IMO Miyazaki pretty much was Studio Ghibli. Weren't Ghibli in financial trouble a couple of years ago aswell?
I've never been much of an anime fan, but this is still pretty sad to hear. There's something I just find unique about Miyazaki's films, that I don't find in other anime. I can actually watch his films with other people without feeling uncomfortable, or like I'm too old for it.
What a chill guy
That bit reminds me of a reference to the studio's name being put on an Engine in Porco Rosso.

It's like anything else: music, mmos, western animation, hollywood films, etc - a lot of it is just mass produced garbage. There are some really solid annie mays you just have to find a way to pick them out from the people who will recommend you to watch stuff like dragon ball z and inuyasha :v: [sp]or god forbid naruto[/sp]
this is pretty sad. I just started getting into studio ghibli and miyazaki. oh well. hopefully something even more amazing and captivating will come along but I doubt it :(
Well, i guess it is a good a time as any to pick up all of their movies on Blu-Ray.
Time for a Ghibli marathon.
Just don't miss out on Cowboy Bebop, it's some legit stuff.
Its dub is only beaten by ghost stories.
afaik Miyazaki has been dishing out heavy critique of the huge amounts of fanservice found in modern anime, so there's that
Quite amusing that you say this considering your avatar is from one of the most fanservice-y animes of recent history
Quite amusing that you say this considering your avatar is from one of the most fanservice-y animes of recent history
It's satirical fan service.
Quite amusing that you say this considering your avatar is from one of the most fanservice-y animes of recent history
you are aware it takes the piss on plenty of anime fan service tropes right? Kill la kill is fanservice tropes while jojo's bizarre adventure is early fighting manga tropes, hence why I and plenty of other westerners love both to death. [editline]3rd August 2014[/editline] seriously look at jojo's bizarre adventure/kill la kill on tv tropes, its like 20 pages of tropes.
It's satirical fan service.
It doesn't do it terribly well. Sometimes I don't know if KLK is being satirical or it's just trying to be a cooky, cooky anime.
There pretty much the only company that does 2D hand draw animation. :( Disney/Pixar needs to hire or buy them.
Welp time for Studio Ghibli to start making moeblob garbage like KyoAni
afaik Miyazaki has been dishing out heavy critique of the huge amounts of fanservice found in modern anime, so there's that
IIRC, he was complaining about moeblob with large, unrealistic eyes and high-pitched, "cutesy" girls voice being what sells. Not that fanservice is a problem in most modern anime.
but doesn't studio gihbli do fill work for tons of anime? shouldn't that be enough to keep it afloat while its between big projects?
It's satirical fan service.
Its also part of one of the shows main themes. Without that the show would be pretty different.
afaik Miyazaki has been dishing out heavy critique of the huge amounts of fanservice found in modern anime, so there's that
Aren't the deadlines for anime shorter now? I know that it's longer for media that follows the film/OVA model. The industry contains a lot of talented people who have worked for big name movies in the past.
Aw shit. They had great movies.
Well that's an understatement. Ghibli has made some of the best films ever.
Quite amusing that you say this considering your avatar is from one of the most fanservice-y animes of recent history
Kill la Kill is an odd case. Early on it plays it for all it's worth and then it just kind of stops and becomes a fact of life. Eventually you just stop noticing and eventually it's barely even notable because everybody ends up naked at one point or another.
