Matthew Inman (perhaps better known as web comic creator The Oatmeal) has an ambitious fund-raising project up his sleeve—to save Tesla’s Wardenclyffe Tower.
Wardenclyffe Tower is rich in history, a symbolic landmark of Nikola Tesla’s last great piece of scientific research that was in Tesla’s mind, destined to change the world.
I sat down with The Oatmeal for this Forbes exclusive to discuss his Tesla passion, ambitious campaign plans, and his motivation to attempt to execute such a massive fundraising goal.
Inman learned that the land was going up for sale for $1.6 million after seeing incoming tweets, saying that the folks trying to save Wardenclyffe were having trouble raising money, and then it got promoted on reddit. Someone in the comments mentioned that the people saving Wardenclyffe should probably contact The Oatmeal, due to having one of the most virally-successful fundraising campaigns in the case of Funnyjunk vs. The Oatmeal, which eventually became Charles Carreon vs. The Entire Internet—so Inman decided to step in and see what he could do to help.
And on request, the Indiegogo campaign link.
According to Forbes, the state of New York will match $850,000 if the fundraiser reaches that. The Indiegogo campaign has raised $100,000 in the first 3 hours.
Operation Let's Build A Goddamn Tesla Museum has reached its funding goal on this, the 21st of August! Rejoice
Campaign status: $1,076,162 raised as of 1:16 AM PDT, August 25th.

I have immense respect for this man and his genius, especially when you know about the shit Edison put him through.
Nearly $180k already with 45 days left.
I think people need to stop mining for gold and start mining for geeks.

You can't make rings and chains out of geeks.
Well, you can. It requires a bit of murder, but you can.

But you can make progress out of them!
Already 185k Holy shit
Why not rebuild the tower that provides free wireless en- Oh wait, horrible idea. Nobody would make money from it.
Sometimes I wonder what Tesla could have accomplished if Edison hadn't kept screwing him over. Again and again.
Why not rebuild the tower that provides free wireless en- Oh wait, horrible idea. Nobody would make money from it.
It's just a wireless energy transmission system. no free energy bullshit. it's like the current day induction coils, aside from the fact that induction is slow as fuck, has a short range, has terrible efficiency issues, and gets hotter than the sun.
I love Tesla, but the "free electricity" thing is a bullshit lie that is impossible.

Tesla's tower was simply an alternative to shitty power cables. If anything, money would be saved on state infrastructure management having to maintain all the fallen cable poles in the country.

Think straight with me for a sec, how are you charging for that?

I only need to generally look as far as a SkyTrain's Linear Induction Motor to demonstrate how a lot of effort is needed to transfer a rather small quantity of energy.
Jesus fuck if this opens I will personally drive the fuck up there to visit. I goddamn love Tesla, one of the best inventors ever.

You aren't/can't. That's why the tower was never finished because the electric companies funding it found out they can't make money off of it.
In the 5 minutes I've watched it has gone up over $2000!

I think that we may reach the asking price by tomorrow sometime. Especially if it continues at this rate.
I didn't think my respect for Inman could go any higher than the way he destroyed that lawyer.
Now it just skyrocketed.
I really hope he gets some corporate sponsorship from google or the other people he is asking.
Just remember guys, the state is going to match his price.
If he gets over $1M -- they will match it.
WIN!
I left it open for 45 minutes then came back and refreshed and it raised $22k

Sadly the match is up to $850,000
Think straight with me for a sec, how are you charging for that?
It'd be cool as a government service paid for by taxes. Not that it would ever happen except for in very small countries/cities with lots of budget to throw around (pretty much nowhere these days).
Sadly the match is up to $850,000
If they get enough to match they'll have enough to buy the property.
Gonna donate as soon as I can, this seems like an awesome cause.
I also predict this thing is going to to take off, considering it's day 1 and we're at $230,000!
If they get enough to match they'll have enough to buy the property.
If it keeps up at this rate then this will pay for it outright.

Someone really loves Tesla.
you're going to be seeing a lot more of these as the campaign gets into the later stages
