Apple was just awarded a whole mess of patents by the USPTO. But one stands out in particular: a 3D display and imaging system. Wave your hands and the system picks up your movement. Sort of like the Xbox Kinect. Or, uh, exactly like the Xbox Kinect. The system described in Apple's patent would use a projector with a scanning beam that picks up your movements via a receiver, shown as a secondary device. Your movements are transferred to the system and a user can interact in a virtual space using their body as their only input device:
To be effective, it is also important that such devices be capable, when desired or necessary, of economically but effectively and precisely providing feedback to the user. Thus, such devices should incorporate audio and/or visual mechanisms for reporting to the user the effects and results of the 3D input.
Sound familiar?
Apple does point out that the projector could be used to show holographic imagery, something the Kinect doesn't currently do—well, officially anyway. Think Minority Report meets Kinect.
The patents also indicate Apple's intention to employ the technology in a wide range of applications including medical diagnostics, entertainment, flight simulation, robotics, gaming, and (everyone's favorite 90's buzzword) virtual reality. Microsoft currently uses the tech to make out-of-shape people dance in their living room.
What does this all mean, though? If you'd asked a year ago, I would've said at worst it meant that Apple wouldn't want much more than some licensing fees out of this. But given how aggressively the company's gone after its Android competitors? A little harder to say. Surely this can't be enforced? I am not an expert on patent law (and I don't claim to be) but surely US patent law has a "first to market" clause that would make this sort of patent useless as Microsoft already have a product on the market using something similar, not to mention they probably have patents for it.
Apple are getting fucking stupid with these patents lately.
What. Why apple why?
What. Why apple why?
Because Apple are patent trolls now obviously.
Apple might as well just officially name themselves "Crapple" and get the fuck over themselves.
Gizmodo and their ultrasensationalist headlines
I don't think they are that far off this time to be honest.
So what's Microsoft got to say bout that?
And this my children, is why, no matter how popular or mainstream apple macs became and how cool they were, and how much people assumed they would become number one, the microsoft windows shall stand the test of time.
Dumb me all you want, it will not stop the inevitability!
A couple years from now, they will say they were the first to do this, just like the tablet.
And everyone will blindly believe them.

No, just like blind mac cave people
AKA hipsters
No, just like blind mac cave people
AKA hipsters
No, people are inherently retarded, they'll believe whatever everyone else is chattering on about. Then those assholes will pass it along and then they'll.. you know what? Really, anything word of mouth is a virus of thought.
The reason why Mac/Apple do not have that "virus" problem is because they're actually the viruses and hipsters are the diseased plague rats spreading it.

AKA scapegoats
I think Apple gave Steve Jobs cancer
I think Apple gave Steve Jobs cancer
No, cause then they would have a patent on cancer :v:
also how the fuck did apple patent this, they don't even have a device that does this what the fuck.
also how the fuck did apple patent this, they don't even have a device that does this what the fuck.
Apple has TONS of patents on stuff they have no intent on ever producing or using.
it works differently than kinect
just because the end result for the user is the same does not mean its patent trolling
also how the fuck did apple patent this, they don't even have a device that does this what the fuck.
On the market anyway.
If you worked on some super amazing device you would (if you were sensible) patent it when its in the development phase before it goes to market to ensure that you hold onto it.
How are apple getting away with these ridiculous patents? With the iPhone 4 they basically patented the rounded rectangle.
Rotten to the core yet again are we, apple?
This will only get funny when Apple sues Microsoft
No worries. Microsoft holds a lot of stock in Apple so I doubt there will be much conflict...this time.
Inb4 another sue war
and apple sucks
Apple sucks.
The reputation and quality of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has slipped in recent years, a far cry from the days Albert Einstein worked as a file clerk there... :v:
Let's face it though, a future with Apple is the stuff you probably dream about. Sharp, sleek surfaces, concealed cables, huge, epic, artistic, well-designed buildings, sliding doors everywhere with touch pads to control everything, fast software, efficient, error and hassle free.
A future like this:

This is the sort of stuff I can see Apple looking at strongly as soon as it becomes viable for development. Yeah so what if the buildings cost a bit more? They'll not just be hunks of concrete blocks built with low costing in mind, but things of beauty that you'll want to visit, explore and be fascinated by time and time again.
Basically, an apple future is one of technological innovation, very artistic, spending billions of dollars on a sweet futuristic building for shits + giggles and generally making things look aesthetically pleasing and uniform, so you might spend a bit extra on materials and innovation, but at least it'll look great and stand the test of time.
A Microsoft future though..?

Recycling the same technologies year-by-year, not really progressing anywhere, squeezing money out of people year-after-year whilst not really offering any new features or innovation (apart from a slightly better interface).
Microsoft Future? I think you mean Google Future.
That's funny.
Even the year after year without innovation thing.

That looks all well and good now, but it'll only be two years before we have to replace the campus for a minor upgrade. (This one comes in slightly off-white!)

Funny, I can play that game on my windows but not on a mac. (as of yet)
