It's honestly kind of pathetic if it was intentional. I mean, you need a way to dim a normal, regular old lamp and THIS is what ends up on screen?
What about its production time? Did it all go smoothly or did they need cut corners?
Seems like something the director wanted in the last second, hence the DIY
