(NEWSER) – A North Carolina teenager died one of the most horrific workplace deaths imaginable on his first day on the job. Mason Cox, 19, died on Saturday after being pulled feet-first into a wood chipper, police in Kings Mountain say. WSOC reports that co-workers who had been cutting down trees in a yard were so distressed by the sight of Cox's body that they ran around ripping off their gloves and hats, causing neighbors to think that they were being attacked by bees. Police say John Crawford (some sources have him listed as Jon Crawford), the owner of Crawford's Tree and Stump Grinding Service, was hospitalized after having a heart attack at the scene, the station reports.
Officials tell WRAL that Cox apparently became caught in the machine when he tried to kick a tree limb inside and his clothing snagged. Crawford, who has temporarily shut down the business, says Cox had been assigned a task considered safe for a beginner. "I've been in the business for 26 years. I've had one other accident where a person was injured. Mason Cox was working side by side with two experienced employees," he tells WBTV, adding that he is grief-stricken over the incident. "I have not slept. I am sick from it," he says. "I would trade places with that child right now." Cox's mother says she started screaming when she discovered how he died. "I loved him very much and I'm going to miss him very much," she tells WBTV. (This state is the deadliest for US workers.)
Man, that must have been quite a ghasty scene... and wow, what a HORRIBLE way to go! :/
Kid tried to kick a hunk of lumber further into the machine.
Uhhh

Safety first kids... right?
Kid tried to kick a hunk of lumber further into the machine.

Well, the owner did say he assigned him a task "safe for a beginner".
Having said that, WHY ON EARTH would you even think of getting one of your limbs closer to a motherfucking woodchipper?!

It's Common Sense 101, jesus fucking christ

So, uh... certainly not a quick death. :/
As cynical and dark humored as I am, even this is blood curdling horror.

I'd be the first one to throw in a Fargo pun, truth be told. :v:
But yea, this must hust have been, and will be, very traumatic for the people involved.

:why:
Btw notice the poll on the left hand side of the article.. 10% Hilarious.
We are not alone, at least.
(This state is the deadliest for US workers.)
Should probably consider regulation for that but I don't think regulation could have really prevented this.
Jesus, what a horrible way to go.
Why did he think kicking a limb inside the chipper was a good idea..
Maybe he was mildly stoned/drunk? We'll never know.
This was a very easily prevented death
it's kind of common sense 101 to not put loose clothing anywhere near spinning death machines
instead of using another chunk of wood via throwing it he uses his leg
It's so depressing seeing a 19-year-old enter the running for the Darwin Awards.
I feel sorry for the guy's family, and all witnesses. The sound must have been beyond horrifying.

I am pretty sure that you are/might as well be alone if you think any part of this is funny.
Cox's mother says she started screaming when she discovered how he died. "I loved him very much and I'm going to miss him very much," she tells WBTV
To me it's fucking gut wrenching.

Pretty much, it could have been prevented, had he realized that he was standing next to a gawddamn woodchipper.
To me it's fucking gut wrenching.
Of course it is. It's a tragedy that could have been easily prevented -- there's no one else to blame but him.
Fuck, he went in feet first.
That's like double horrible, he would have watched himself being pulled in.
Not only is it fucked up for the poor kid, but everyone around who had to witness it, that shit would make sure you never slept soundly again.
it's kind of common sense 101 to not put loose clothing anywhere near spinning death machines
He probably stopped thinking with common sense when they told him it was "a safe job for a beginner". People are stupid and when you tell them they're safe whilst doing a potentially dangerous job, they feel free to forget about how things might go wrong, I bet they'll never make that mistake again.
Should probably consider regulation for that but I don't think regulation could have really prevented this.
There's supposed to be safety gates that prevent you from doing that, but that only applies to rental machines not commercial ones
How hilarious. A young adults life was cut short by a moment of stupidity resulting in a horrendous death so horrifying to watch it gave a man a heart attack.
what the fuck is wrong with you people
I'm trying to imagine how this could've happened if he really did have two experienced employees working "side by side" with him.
How hilarious. A young adults life was cut short by a moment of stupidity resulting in a horrendous death so horrifying to watch it gave a man a heart attack.
WHY ARENT YOU LAUGHING ISNT IT FUNNY WHAT AN IDIOT HAHA
what the fuck is wrong with you people
its not that people find it funny, it's that anyone with ANY sense would know better to not play with turned on and currently active machines that can literally turn you into a blob
Jesus, how horrible. Condolences to the family.

Slow your roll, bud
Who's laughing/shitposting about how funny this is?

I'm not denying it wasn't one of the dumbest things anyone could possibly do. I'm just saying it's disgusting that people find this hilarious.
Should probably consider regulation for that but I don't think regulation could have really prevented this.
Regulation would certainly prevent it, the problem is it's way cheaper to go unregulated and we're already dirt poor.
Kings Mountain is less than a 10 minute drive from me. I'm intimately acquainted. The reason why NC is the deadliest state for workers is in part because of stupidity and also in part because employment here is really bad and literally throwing yourself into harms way for a buck is a common thing to your lower economic classes. I know lots of people who consistently get seriously injured on the job, and it goes unreported and mostly untreated because nobody wants to get fired, nobody has/can afford health insurance, and nobody else around them wants to be a snitch and lose someone else their job. Yeah like I said, sometimes it's just people being stupid, like the guy who puts his limbs anywhere near a woodchipper, but it's actually a bigger problem than that.
Obviously with this being a death, it's on a whole different level from your regular workplace injury, but my point is that this type of behavior doesn't surprise me and I believe that it is cultural and is embedded into the people around here.
I'm not denying it wasn't one of the dumbest things anyone could possibly do. I'm just saying it's disgusting that people find this hilarious.
oh well, yeah, people are pretty fucked up and will laugh at a lot of disgusting crap
just have to roll with the punches, or in this case, the chuckles

Well that's just your opinion.

Seems suspect for sure. As for accident? He became too focused on getting the task at expense of thinking straight. Im sure it has happened to many of us.
The only reason it may be funny to some is due to the chain reaction.
