A young soldier who killed himself days after learning his father would not wake from a coma, gave his friends gifts to remember him by before he took his life. Private Ryan Wrathall, 21, died from a gunshot wound to the head while serving in Basra, Iraq, after he shot himself with a light machine gun on February 12, 2009, an inquest heard. He was found, in his tent, in full uniform, with his hand still on the trigger of the gun, West London Coroner’s Court heard on May 2 and 3. Fellow soldiers, who had flown from as far as Germany, told how in the hours leading up to his death Mr Wrathall handed out Help for Heroes wristbands to his comrades. He said to Lance Corporal Roelof Du Preez: “Something to remember me by.” Mr Wrathall, who moved to Surbiton in 2005, then woke him between 3am and 4am and asked him to sign what a form proving he had shown him around camp. It was in fact a will form, leaving everything to his mother. Most people who saw him the night before he died said he was chirpier than normal, but, in a late night chat about his father to Private Callum Daly, Mr Wrathall began to cry. Private Daly said: “He said he wished he could see his mum face-to-face tell her how much he loved her.” Despite cheering up after that, the muffled burst of a machine gun was heard as soldiers went to breakfast the next day, and Colour Sergeant Daniel Daley found Mr Wrathall dead, with three bullet holes in his tent. He said: “It’s sad, and the fact we weren’t war fighting was even harder... everything was standing down, so it was hard to take.” Coroner Alison Thompson said she was satisfied Private Wrathall took his own life.
The inquest only finished recently two years after. Man, that's just terrible.
Coroner Alison Thompson said she was satisfied Private Wrathall took his own life.
.. uhhh
Looks like he couldnt save himself
That was fucking shit, if you're gonna make an attempt at black humour at least make it funny.
Coroner Alison Thompson said she was satisfied Private Wrathall took his own life.
That was so badly worded.
Coroner Alison Thompson said she was satisfied Private Wrathall took his own life.
What :ninja:
.. uhhh
As in, she's sure it was suicide. This happened back in 2009.
.. uhhh
Satisfied that she had accurately determined the cause of death I'm sure.
What
It means that the coroner concluded that he took his own life and was not by another cause.

That's pretty stupid and selfish. I bet his mother's pretty heartbroken.
That's pretty stupid and selfish. I bet his mother's pretty heartbroken.
Exactly, instead of supporting his mother who must've been equally, if not more grief-stricken, he goes and kills himself and makes it worse for her. Now she's lost two of her family.
Should have thought about looking after his Mother when he got back rather than taking his own life and leaving his Mother without a son.
What a dumb asshole. I mean it's sad and all, but that doesn't make it any less true.
Looks a bit like our own compwhizii. :v:
Don't be an asshole. Show some respect.
What a dumb asshole. I mean it's sad and all, but that doesn't make it any less true.
No, you're a dumb asshole. How would you know about what he was going through? It's easy to just call him dumb, but you can't possibly understand what was going on through his mind and how intense his emotions were. There are also other possible factors such as bullying.
This thread would be completely different if it was an American soldier.
I know you're 12, and you're trying to hide the fact you have no friends by pretending that you find making people angry over an internet forums funny, but seriously. Think about if you were in his position. EDIT: Fuck my automerge.
Exactly, instead of supporting his mother who must've been equally, if not more grief-stricken, he goes and kills himself and makes it worse for her. Now she's lost two of her family.
Regardless, this is a tragedy through and through. There's absolutely no need to call him stupid. He was under a tremendous amount of pressure by having his father in coma and being out on the front line. Thought isn't exactly rational at that point.
Wow an LMG, that must of been strange to shoot yourself with. [editline].[/editline] Also, I don't think he was a dick for it. I know it's quite selfish to kill yourself and leave your mother on her own. But everyone deals with things differently, everyone has different emotions and stuff.
Sorry mum gotta go
thats racist
It's actually "dark humour" example, after ODing , I managed to go my counselling appointment and I was sitting there, well, succumbing to the stuff I took, and my Counselor had told me about it, a week later. I said to her, Well, I don't remember any of that, but on the good side, at least I didn't die in your office. She laughed, and said, "Darien you have such dark humour." lol.
This will be worse if his father does eventually wake up
man, thats awful :'(
