Currently in its third season on NBC, the critically praised, little-watched Hannibal has been canceled.
Though the show has never been a mass hit, NBC has renewed it twice before because Hannibal has been inexpensive to license (because of international sales and a VOD deal). It has also drawn a fanatically devoted cult audience. Nonetheless, airing as a summer offering, Season 3 has hit series lows. Thursday’s episode drew 1.8 million viewers and a .5 in the 18-to-49 demographic. Season 3 is 13 episodes, and a spokesperson for NBC confirmed that the show will air in full throughout the summer.
Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, stars Hugh Dancy as Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter. Critics have complimented its aesthetics and thoughtful approach to violence throughout its run.
A statement from Fuller praised NBC, and also left the door open for the show to try to find another home. “NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers. Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure. Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”
Son of a bitch.
If anyone of you are holding out on watching this show because it's on NBC, don't. It's great and I went into it expecting mediocrity.
Never got around to watching this, but it's a bummer to hear this, seems like people really loved those first two seasons. Wouldn't surprise me if Hulu or Netflix picked it up. Maybe even Amazon, since you can already stream Hannibal through Prime.
Taylor Swift, please make this right.
Wow, people are going to flip. Hannibal is one of the greatest TV shows of all time

A lot of people are reluctant to watch it considering it's about a serial killer and on NBC, but I gave it a chance and it does the source material justice. It's pretty goddamn brutal too, never would have expected such a program to come out of NBC known for their mediocrity.

I don't even think you need cable to tune in for Hannibal. How this aired on NBC at prime time baffles me.
That's a shame. I watched the first season when I had my student Amazon prime. It was enjoyable, and I heard season 2 was even better.
Felt this one coming when season 3 got pushed to summer but still, damn it.
Now, where did I put my torch and pitchfork?
Well fuck.
I do think Series 3 is becoming a tad self indulgent however, the writing is getting to a point where every line has to have some sort of deep philosophical meaning to it. The hallucinations/visions are getting really abundant and are starting to look more like a display of the cinematography skills rather than furthering the story.
it's not totally ogre, NBC just broadcast the show, they didn't make it
might get sold to someone else

I can imagine Netflix buying it.

Amazon streams the show over in the US. Netflix has rights in EU, I could see either buying it up. Netflix would be extremely wise to do it considering they have the money and the audience.

That's a funny way to spell The Sopranos.
Anyways, damn, I actually really loved Hannibal, never got to see the 2nd season though.

You 100% should, the show gets a lot better during series 2, a lot of great solid episodes and they ironed out most of the creases/issues from the first.
Seriously one of the best shows that's been on tv in years. It's up there with Breaking Bad for me.
It focuses on a great actor, a great character, and it really takes "Procedural" crime shows on and gives them a run for their money in that field, it's an interesting show from a cultural studies perspective as the writers really did their homework for a lot of the obscure topics, it's a great cooking show(Disturbingly so) and just over all has this cool, slick aesthetic that is just ever present. Seriously one of the best shows because it manages to be so great all around.
And it made me fall in love with Mads Mikkelsen.

I do not want it to go just on the cinematography alone.
Sometimes in my mind, I can split people in two kinds, those who could stomach watching Game of Thrones and enjoy it, and those who can't stand its willingness to depict anything from exploding skulls to rape
The split probably comes down to about 2/3~ ish would watch GoT. I can count the number of people I know well enough on both hands who would really enjoy watching something like Hannibal, after one of my friends clued me in on what the show was like. I personally haven't watched it because I really don't like excessive gore, I don't like the concept and I'm not a great fan of horror.
I never finished this show and I don't quite know why I stopped watching (might've been the pacing in season 2) but it's kinda sad to hear this got cancelled because it was very well made and I thought it had a really strong fanbase

If the cancel blacklist I'll flip
Oh man, I know so many people who watched this, it is huge in the UK. Front and centre of our American import channel "Sky Atlantic" since it first went out. My whole family watches this, they are going to be so pissed.
fuck sake this is a show where so much thought and work gets put in and they just cancel it like that.
I just hope season 3 will give us a good closure to the show
It's funny how many people hated the idea of this show when it was announced. I remember seeing it announced here and I think it got rated a lot of funnies and people in general dismissed it saying its going to be shit because nbc.
Crazy how it turned out to be one of the best and most beautiful shows ever created. Fingers crossed it gets picked up elsewhere

yahoo tv..... shameless community crossover
Let's hope Mads Mikkelse can get snatched onto Game of Thrones to play Euron Greyjoy. I think he'd be perfect for it.

Actually sent an e-mail to Mads' agent pretty much saying he would be a perfect Euron and that fans worldwide would love to see him on the show so if he is being cast that Mads should totally apply.
Although they probably get e-mails like that every day, so chances of something like this happening are slim. Oh well, a man can dream.
Still 2 seasons more than Firefly.
It certainly is a work of art, considering that the series had awful ratings when it comes to viewership, the only reason it got two more seasons is because of how well it was made. Someone out there was willing to lose money for the sake of art and it makes me giddy yet happy.
Really hope another network picks them up before dancy and mads get new roles somewhere else and it becomes hard to get them together again.
Sad news. It's a terrific show, I hope Hulu or Netflix picks it up. :/
