[QUOTE]South Korea has awarded one of its highest cultural honours to the rapper Psy for taking the world by storm with his "Gangnam Style" hit. The culture ministry announced on Tuesday that the 34-year-old singer, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, would receive the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit, awarded for "outstanding meritorious services" to the arts.
"Psy has been chosen to be decorated for not only being a long-term artist, but also for advertising Gangnam widely and increasing the world's interest in Korea," a culture ministry official told reporters.

Good for him! A medal for dancing around the world. Now that's a job worth doing.
Gangnam Style is the new 99 Luftballons.

God dammit I need to listen to 99 Red Balloons now.
Also deserves it.
They hand this out as if people are going to go to Korea now simply because "Hey, that's where Psy's from!". He is not going to increase their tourism, and if he is, fuck the world.
-snip-
initially, I thought it was a little weird that a funny music video can earn someone a national medal
but I also understand that recently, s korea has put a lot of effort to break into the american/global market, so I guess I can see why psy's success is a big deal.
nonetheless, I like gangnam style and psy, so cool beans

No but it increases South Korea's image since they're widely left un-viewed by the majority of people - people will look into their culture and think "oh hey this looks neat", or some other form of chaos theory blah blah blah
It's a positive thing that Psy has done.

Korea loves the song as much of the rest of the world.

Before Gangnam Style was popular: Wow this is hilarious and unique.
After Gangnam Style got popular: Goddamn this is total shit why does anyone like this.

I never really liked it.
Gagnam Style is the most creative thing I've seen in a long time.
If I hear Gangnam style one more time I swear I will punch the first fucking infant I see

You're gonna get a fist full of glass from the next mirror you pass then.
I still think its a good song. I see people hating on it because it went mainstream, all I can say to that is... Fucking Hipsters.
When i posted gangnam style into the videos section, it got like 200 winners and 1 disagree/dumb.
You guys DID like it back then.

there's a difference between going mainstream and being plastered fucking everywhere. i can't turn on a radio without hearing gangnam style. i can't on my daily routine without hearing my friends talk about "op gragas style" or some retarded bullshit. in the span of a week, i've seen gangnam style on tv twice and both times it was on national tv.
if only it was GAL男宣言 at least i could somewhat bare it
I love the song and dance mostly because of this video with the women.

The one in the yellow skirt and one in the red shorts are my fave.

I don't get this. I've never heard it on the radio and whenever I mention it people have no idea what it is.
Maybe because I'm not in High School?
He always comes across as a really likeable and smart guy in interviews so that's good. I'm just worried once people (proper people, not facepunch users) start to get bored of the song he'll face the brunt of the backlash.
