Dunno what they are going about with the steam controller being about the same as 360 controller when it comes to shooters, it works a lot better, not as well as a mouse, but a LOT better than a controller.
I do agree with the button placement tho, I press Y instead of X a lot too, but I just got this thing 2 days ago on a whim while at gamestop, so I'm not 100% used to the buttons.
I'm not really interested, i'd still rather have a m+k, not that i'm saying this pad is crap but still most people would probably agree unless you're a die hard valve fan(yes i know what forum i'm on)
Some games I just don't like playing with a keyboard and mouse. Say, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, basically third person games. But those third person games have shooter segments which feel janky with a controller. I find myself frustrated at trying to hit my target, and I especially hate sniping segments with a controller. I always find myself fiddling with the right aim saying "no, a bit to the right. Shit, fuck, to the left. God damn it." The Steam controller finds a nice balance. And it's versitality is amazing, to me.
One thing that stood out to me was basically a feature I first encountered in Ocarina of Time 3D. You equiped the slingshot/bow, and you could aim normally with the circle-pad. But you could also use the gyroscope to aim. I found myself using a combination of this, aiming generally with the circle-pad, and fine-tuning with the gyroscope. No controller seemed to impliment this. Dualshock 3 was fully capable, but I've yet to play a game that used it. Steam Controller, through custimization, can.

This really appeals to me, hypothetically solving the issue I mentioned earlier.
As someone who's been following the steam controller really hard since announcement, i can 100% say nobody has unlocked its full potential yet.
If anyone here owns one and thinks its crap or thinks its too hard to set up, I recommend Woodsie's tutorials. They're some of the most in depth out there and he has quite a few since he's had the controller early for awhile now. He's also a good friend of mine so any questions anyone has, I could direct to him.
I want to know what it's like with emulators since that's that's mainly how I use controllers.

Why would you want it for emulators? Pretty much anything you might be emulating will probably have had either a d-pad or a stick originally and any other traditional controller already has that.
I used my friends steam controller and tried out MGS V at this house earlier this week and I have to say i'd really rather use something like a PS4 controller. It has a touchpad that can be used as a mouse for the more controller unfriendly areas in games and it has a nice size and weight imo.

Currently, there's no support. It's not read as a real Xinput controller, so you can't just connect to it in the emulator, unfortuantely. It might be coming soon!
Dolphin works decently with the controller. You know, with it's emulate-a-keyboard thing.

You have to get used to it, it's definitely absolutely worth it. It has a pretty steep learning curve though, and to actually get buttons right you're better off manually doing it.
I hear mgs 5 doesn't like mouse + joystick at the same time. Some games have shit support for people using 'hybrid' controls. Fallout 4 literally cannot use Joystick + mouse for example but it works well as a controller even with just KB/M button set ups.

if you pretty much don't give a shit about customization and love sticks, or would rather use a keyboard, theres like, 0 reason to buy this for sure.
Why buy a flight stick when you'd rather a controller, after all.
person I found this thing to be basically my 'ultimate control device'
Rich nailed it when he talked about wireless m&k as a better alternative for couch gaming. I've been using a wireless setup for months with only a few issues (e.g. occasional input delay). The main drawback is that you have to sit upright; some people might want to lie down or sprawl all over their couch.
I feel like they gave it an unfair shake, but only because there's no point in THEM owning one
Rich is a KB/M guy and Jack is a controller guy. Neither of them are both. You'll find it a lot easier to love if you like both.

Absolutely true. Altho the more you use it, the harder it is to put down. There's something really fun about finding out how you can make a game mechanically and fluidly work on the steam controller.

I came from a customizable mouse + gamepad so I was already under the spell of macros and customization.
literally 15% of my time playing dying light was having fun trying to find what worked, up until I completed my settings with the mouse wheel using items automatically, right mouse for shield, and a bunch of other shit.
my second playthrough of Dead space 3 basically composed of my mouse combining aim and shoot, and me snapping around blatting everything like a psychopath
now I kind of regret wasting money on a gamepad I never use.

Pretty neat. But why is the controller making a buzzing sound whenever he is touching the right pad?

Honestly the best use i've had for the steam controller has been navigating windows from a couch/bed. Obviously it's not going to replace a KB+M on the desktop but it does a fine job in places where you wouldn't be able to use them, it's far better at multitasking than anything else with that form factor.
i love my steam controller tbh, i'm still getting used to it and it's not great for everything but it's a cool piece of hardware and i'm really glad i own it
Spork.
