The beggars have become too many, according to Stockholm city officials. Social services are now offering EU migrants a free one-way ticket home. - This is an irresponsible cat and mouse game that must end, says Anna Silver who runs a fundraiser event for homeless European migrants. The beggars in Stockholm city is increasing and this summer, the problem has escalated, according to social services in Stockholm. A few days ago an effort began to get homeless European migrants away from the streets of Stockholm. - They have many questions. Many wonder if they're being deported. However, we inform that it is completely voluntary, says Susie Moonan. So far 120 people accepted the offer for free journey home, the majority coming from Romania. "Stockholm city officials says that EU migrants are becoming more and more. But I work with these people every day and I do not share that image. This is a way for politicians to get rid of people they do not want here" says Anna Silver The Salvation Army operates the only shelter in the city during the summer - with 20 seats. - It's not enough. And of those who live here almost none are from Romania. A return trip is not a solution, these people have nothing in Romania. Almost everyone comes back" says Larisa Lacatus, coordinator at the Salvation Army Community Center.
http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article19205911.ab
Good to see someone is at least keeping the streets clean.
The "beggars" are common in Örebro aswell. Gypsies that sit next to every store "begging" for money.
They are not in need of money and are doing the begging in shifts up here in north sweden.
The beggars have become too many, according to Stockholm city officials.
This is an understatement. It's gotten to a point where I can barely turn a corner without seeing someone sitting down in front of a store wrapped in a blanket and with a cup in their hand. It's either that or someone keeping balance on a stick while their legs shake and they thrust a cup in your face. Thing is, I never give money to these people because it's almost indistinguishable nowadays the difference between an actual beggar, and someone who has been "planted" by a gang or similar entity (which isn't uncommon). I'd rather donate money to an actual organization. To be honest I think that the reason the "sitting beggar" has increased is because previously these people would roam the trains leaving small laminated notes saying "My sister/son/mother/daughter/etc is ill and needs medicine, please spare some change" (which is ironic given our healthcare system). I've noticed less of those and more of the sitting ones. So it's probably the same people, or the gangs changed tactics because they realized it's not working. On another note, I don't get why they're wearing the blankets in full daylight. It's summer. How are they not dying from the heat?
where i live beggars have started camping outside of ATMs begging people for money they're the same people who are always seen with a can of lager in one hand and a fag in the other i feel bad for people who are genuinely homeless because they've been kicked out of the house for being lgbt or whatever but people who make no effort to improve their lives and instead rely on harassing others can get fucked tbh
What I don't like about these beggars is the fact that they actually use "tactics" to get money from you - I'll gladly give money to some homeless guy, but these people are stretching out their little cups like I'm the messiah and I hate it. Just give me the "'spare some change?" and a "have a nice day" afterwards and that's more than enough. Also, you hear a lot about these people being planted by gangs, etc. - I don't know to what degree this is true, but it isn't exactly encouraging.
Give them bus rides home, a week later, they're right back. I think we have like 10 of them out where I live, and a month ago or so they set up shop in a parking lot not far from here, dismantling cars, harassing people, letting big dogs run around etc. It's gotten way out of hand, but as usual, none in Sweden has the balls to tell them off and keep them out.
And when I or someone from Eastern Europe says the same thing about gypsies/cigani that people are saying now we all get labeled as racists and whatnot. Lovely.
well, no one should say gypsy
I think it was bbc who made a documentary on the super scummy "fake" beggars its a good watch if you can find it. I'd almost say they are worse than thieves at least thieves don't lie to your face to garner sympathy and then steal from you.
well, no one should say gypsy
What else should we call gypsies if not gypsies?
well, no one should say gypsy
They are gypsies. Why should we not call them gypsies? it's like saying: "We shouldn't call them beggars".. They are beggars.
Now just watch as someone will cry racism.
I've always been taught they're called Roma or Romani
I've always been taught they're called Roma or Romani
The word gypsy has basically devolved into a slur these days
The "beggars" are common in Örebro aswell. Gypsies that sit next to every store "begging" for money.
Same here. Even in the small towns they fucking appear
I noticed this when I visited Stockholm for the first time in 8 years with my ex and buddies a few months ago. We went around for hours looking at things, and in that time saw so many beggars it wasn't funny. Some were just sitting in crowded staircases down to the subway lines, others were performing with some pretty cool music in the old city, and when we crossed a bridge toward the old city we saw some more performing some kindof mime-esque act. But the contrast was pretty shocking when we saw the amount of beggars in Stockholm compared to my hometown a few hundred miles north, where I've only seen two beggars in my entire time living here 3 years
I have literally nothing against the buskers, they liven up the city with music. the blanket and cup beggars and the ones trying to scam people should get deported or something. Also I think they should put up some border control to see if the people entering the country actually can manage themselves (entering the country to work/study/have hotel booked (enough money to book one on site) for vacation) and not live on the street.
I have literally nothing against the buskers, they liven up the city with music. the blanket and cup beggars and the ones trying to scam people should get deported or something.
Exactly what I think.
I've had an obvious smackhead wobble over to me at the bus station asking for money. His story was that a wall of bricks fell on top of him and he lost 5 pints of blood, the hospital just gave him painkillers and he needed money to eat. It was so hilariously bad of a story but I felt sorry for the guy, he was obviously only after money for drugs or some shit.
I have seen a few in my town, but nothing compared to what I have seen in Gothenburg and Stockholm. It's always some handicapped women that can't speak the language, walks around with a baby and hands you a note and a flower begging for money. I keep seeing people hand them money all the time, I'm pretty sure they clear a good amount every day.
I stopped caring about them since they insulted and threatened my girlfriend for genuinely not having any penny on her. They can go fuck themselves, I'll gladly help the actual homeless, not gypsies and alcoholics / drugheads with their dogs.

I asked one if they wanted to go and eat lunch with me if I payed for both. ( Which, any beggar obviously would accept, knowing that they are starving.) Their response? "Wow are you fucking stupid?" and looking at me like I'm an idiot. Protip: if a beggar walks up to you and wants money: Ask them to eat with you and you pay for both. A beggar that is acctualy a beggar, will accept it almost instantly and thank you with so much its incredible. If they arnt acctualy a beggar and you offer them lunch, they will be angry at you, wondering what the fuck is wrong with you. I've tested it 3 times now, and it works.
The Salvation Army operates the only shelter in the city during the summer - with 20 seats.
This seems like the real problem to me but I guess instead of talking about the systemic problems that cause this we can all complain about the time a "gypsy" gave us a funny look.

A cell phone and a place where they can reliably shower and shave is what would really help a lot of homeless people the most because are the two things that would most help them get a job; but that's assuming there even are jobs for them in the first place.
for a lot of them begging is their "job"
it seems Sweden is a fine example of how complaining about Romani people fixes all your problems
