A SELFLESS British soldier took a bullet to the head to save a ten-year-old Afghan girl. Military medic Lance Corporal Craig Murfitt was shot at by a Taliban fighter who used the terrified child as a human shield when he launched an attack from a compound roof. Even though Craig had the insurgent in his sights, he held back on returning fire in case he hit the little girl. Seconds later the Taliban gunman opened up again - and an AK-47 round hit Craig's helmet, knocking him off his feet. As the 25-year-old soldier lay dazed on the ground, the girl managed to run off. And the insurgent was taken out by Craig's comrades. Craig - married with a baby boy named Finlay - said: "I knew I could take the man down. "But being a dad myself, I didn't want to run the risk of killing a kid and undoing all the good work we've achieved. "So I waited, hoping the child would drop down and give me a clear shot." Craig, serving in Helmand with 2nd Royal Tank regiment, added: "I felt the dent in my helmet and said, 'I've been shot in the head.' I tried to stand but had disco legs." Senior officers last night hailed Craig's "courageous restraint". One said: "Holding fire was extremely brave." What a hero.

He didn't really take a bullet to save the girl, but atleast he didn't fire and potentially hit her.
bad hit detection needs a patch but seriously thats pretty heavy.
Dude is awesome, well done.
Pretty awesome. I laughed at the " disco legs " thing though.
Shaming Your Entire Cause 101
They don't care, the Taliban want the fear of the people not their support. They just want to gain power and keep it.
Article name made it sound like he dived infront of her or something. Not taking the shot is just common sense really.
The point is he refused to fire to save himself from being shot.
Craig - married with a baby boy named Finlay Say what now?

Yeah but you have to agree that they could've written that out much better.
Yeah but you have to agree that they could've written that out much better.
The Sun. Make sense now?
Just lovely! Im glad he didnt got shot in the face!
Craig - Married, with a baby boy named Finlay* :eng101: But yeah, great lad.
What an awesome dude. At least there is still some good left in the world.
They don't care, the Taliban want the fear of the people not their support. They just want to gain power and keep it.
I'm pretty sure that particular person just wanted to avoid getting shot, otherwise the plan of "I'll take a girl and run into a bunch of enemy soldiers on purpose hoping they will not shoot me anyway" isn't that fear mongering. Sounds more desperate. He is on a roof and can't escape, so he decides to be an asshole to try and get out of the situation.
What an awesome dude. At least there is still some good left in the world.
There is plenty of good in the world, despite what the news make everyone think.
What a legend.
"Taliban fighter who used the terrified child as a human shield" End them. Fucking end them.
Craig, serving in Helmand with 2nd Royal Tank regiment, added: "I felt the dent in my helmet and said, 'I've been shot in the head.' I tried to stand but had disco legs."
Haha What :v:
Roadside bombings and ambushes are justifiable given the asymmetric balance of guerrilla combat but it's pretty hard to use a child as a shield while keeping your dignity.
Shaming Your Entire Cause 101
We've known of the Taliban doing this since 2001. It isn't new. It's not always direct use of "human shields" (ie. literally standing a person between you and an aggressor); it's often them hiding out in buildings full of civilians so they can't be targeted by ordnance. But still, not exactly a revelation. [editline]20th December 2010[/editline] Soldier looks a bit like Ewan McGreggor.
I shouldn't have to explain the difference between pretending to be a civilian, and physically grabbing somebody and putting them in front of you as a meat shield.
I didn't say "they pretend to be civilians", I said "often them hiding out in buildings full of civilians" which is, technically, using human shields because they are preventing themselves being fired upon by surrounding themselves with innocent civilians. It's quite a sadly common occurrence that Apaches, artillery, CAS etc. is unable to fire on buildings full of known hostiles because there are also civilians in the same compound.
Well, he is a hero technically, because he risked getting killed to save the girls life... Though the thread title had me picturing him diving in front of the poor innocent girl, but oh well, this wasn't so disappointing.
"Disco legs"? [editline]20th December 2010[/editline] Oh, disco as in the 70s thing
Shaming Your Entire Cause 101
Nah that was just a girl, those don't have souls anyway. :downs: (According to Islam at least.) Why the dumbs? According to Islam, women have no souls.
Wait. Did he survive the shot? I'm confused.
