US Army suicides are levelling off but rates of domestic violence and sex crimes among soldiers have increased, a report says.
Suicides among active duty soldiers, as well in the National Guard and the Reserve, totalled 278 in 2011, down 9% from 2010.
It was the first decline in four years.
The report also calls post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) an "epidemic", estimating there could be as many as 472,000 troops with the condition.
"There's a lot of good news in this report, but there's also some bad news," Gen Peter Chiarelli told reporters at a Pentagon news conference. "We know we've got still a lot of work to do."
Violent sex crimes and domestic violence have increased more than 30% since 2006 and child abuse by 43%.
Repeat offendersThe findings follow a 2010 report that said the Army was either missing signs that suicidal soldiers were trouble or were looking the other way as commanders tried to keep up with tight deployment schedules in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Gen Chiarelli said commanders were now getting more soldiers into substance abuse programs, and kicking out more troops for misconduct.
The report also shows an increase in soldiers being brought to hospital for suicidal thoughts.

"I think we've at least arrested this problem and hopefully will start to push it down," Gen Chiarelli said.
Part of the increase in domestic abuse, the report says, is recidivism from previous offenders. Both domestic and child abuse associated with alcohol has increased since 2006.
Such an increase "may be associated" with research linking high rates of drinking and aggression among veterans suffering from combat-related wounds, injuries and illnesses, according to the Army's findings.
While the report notes that screening and treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI) has improved, the Army currently has over 126,000 diagnosed cases of traumatic brain injury, 3,500 of them severe, penetrating injuries.
As of mid-2011, there were over 187,000 diagnosed cases of PTSD, but projections of the number of veterans and current soldiers with the disorder were much higher.[/release]

Well, at least there's a drop in suicides.....
They realized they don't have to take their anger and frustration themselves, they can do it to other people too.
My stepdad was in the US Army for 15 years, he just became a drinker. He doesn't become violent, he just goes to asshole mode which is sometimes hilarious.
I wonder if this is because everyone looks at military service like it's some two year tour in Europe for school.
It's not a fucking grad program. It's war. There's no where else in public service one is ever exposed to this much violence and death and hatred. And then, when they're done, they go home to a country that doesn't even give a shit about the war it's fighting. They don't even notice the soldiers are gone.
No fucking wonder.
I remember reading about gang violence in our military.

Unfortunately so. Gang tags have even turned up in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Personally I think any gang affiliation should result in immediate (dishonorable) discharge from the military, and your file (name, ID, prints, etc) added to the NCIC.

i think we should just let them kill each other
if you send them home then they just fuck shit up at home
A violent soldier is a happy soldier.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Yeah man fuck those soldiers, dying and shit, they're not human beings or anything and totally arent traumitized by war and people being shot and killed and blown up all around them no sir they're just trash that shouldnt even come home.
Amiright?
[sp]No, thats stupid[/sp]
as someone who was exposed to local gang violence early in his childhood, yes i can safely say it's better for gang affiliated soldiers to fight out there in afghanistan than it is for them to fight out here in places like Boston and other cities

Coming from a German.
Coming from a German.
I'm not German. Not whole at least.
What of it?
And now all those troops come home so we can put them in the force to serve and protect I mean to quelch dissent and invade homes.
Life's gonna be perfect 5 years down the road. You'll LOVE it!
Suicides are starting to drop because the people feeling bad over the most recent conflicts have already done it.

Or they are greeted by violence, as baby-killers, and as inhuman demons.

Got problems against Germans broski?
How the fuck does being German relate to that sentence?

They are met with sympathy and respect atleast today.
Of course the suicide rate drops, you have to run out of soldiers killing themselves eventually.

Only gangmembers are exactly the type of people who will abuse their power and commit atrocities that damage our reputation, operational goals, and safety.
Not only that, now when they get out, they go back to the gang, only now they have some of the best combat training in the country, bad news for any rivals or even police and / or federal officers who oppose therm.
Gangmembers should not be allowed in the military, at all. In fact it should be a crime.
