Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is planning to build a statue of the US sailors who were captured in Iranian waters earlier this year, a senior officer said. The provocative proposal is likely to cause outrage in the US and be seized on by Republicans opposed to President Barack Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran. Commander Ali Fadavi, the head of the Guard’s naval forces, said the monument of the surrendering Americans would be a “tourist attraction”. “There are very many photographs of the major incident of arresting US Marines in the Persian Gulf in the media and we intend to build a symbol out of them inside one of our naval monuments,” he told Iran’s Defense Press news agency. The capture of the 10 US sailors in January was hailed by hardliners in Tehran as a victory over the US and presented as proof that Iran was still resisting America despite the nuclear deal. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, said the arrest of the sailors was “God’s deed” and presented medals to the Iranians involved. The sailors were held at gunpoint and paraded before the cameras but released after a day following phone calls between John Kerry, the US secretary of state, and Javad Zarif, the Iranian foreign ministry. While the Obama administration expressed outrage over the incident, officials said later that the sailors swift release was evidence that communication between the US and Iran was improving after years of estrangement.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/12197979/Iran-to-build-a-statue-of-captured-US-sailors.html
A tourist attraction? That's pretty offensive. Or maybe not. I guess Hiroshima's relics are a tourist attraction too... All the same I'm not sure many tourists would feel safe enough visiting Iran.

Trump is not going to shut up about this, his people are probably already coming up with tweets about it
Trump is not going to shut up about this, his people are probably already coming up with tweets about it
who isn't going to shut up about it? this is tasteless and messed up no matter what your political views are
All the same I'm not sure many tourists would feel safe enough visiting Iran.
Pussies. Iran gets about 5 million tourists yearly. In comparison, NYC alone gets about 30 mill tourists yearly, being the tourist hot-spot that it is..
Weird thing to build a statue over, I thought it was gonna be a monument to cooperation or peace for a second
What a strangely-obsessive thing to do. Reminds me of the Iran–U.S. RQ-170 incident where they paraded the captured drone as if it were a primary source of national pride in Iran.
Domestic fodder for hardline idiots, it really isn't worth getting worked up over.
Agree with the mod there tbh., I too fail to see the significance of this statue. The U.S. soldiers were swiftly released, and communication between U.S. and Iran was there, as is the norm these days. The U.S. soldiers probably weren't tortured either. So.. what, they managed to capture 10 American soldiers? Well good job Iran, now make statue out of it because.. just business? I guess it's not a bad idea, although it's not a statue I'd go see in Iran. They should have some cooler shit on display.
I find it funny that they would actually go as far as making a statue of such an minor event that was resolved fast. I guess they are really grasping straws there with hardliners to make the americans and west look evil now that sanctions were lifted. Because this has "desperate" written all over.
Iran is a joke. If they want to celebrate their quasi-Pueblo incidents then by all means.
Imagine being so insecure in your own patriotism and sense of national importance that you would build a statue of such a minor event. I forgot those guys even got captured. Whatever, might make a cool piece of artwork I guess.
I think they too forgot they were captured. "remember when we were held captive by the iranians?"
All the same I'm not sure many tourists would feel safe enough visiting Iran.
From everything I see, Iran is actually a very nice place to visit. People are very friendly despite the way they are portrayed sometimes.

People could say holy shit japan is xenophobic holy shit iran is anti-american, but you would find that actually visiting and meeting the people would make for a rather pleasant experience.

Why else do you think they captured a bunch of US soldiers at gunpoint, forced them to get on their knees with their hands behind their head, etc. The whole time people saying, "Oh, it's not a big deal, Iran didn't even do anything wrong," there were plenty of people pointing out how untrue that was. The Iranians did everything they could, short of violence, to humiliate the soldiers and the US, and for their humiliation attempt they get a "Thank You" from Kerry.
When your country is still a sandy piece of shit, you need something to look up to that isn't being stoned to death
When your country is still a sandy piece of shit, you need something to look up to that isn't being stoned to death
Iran has forests and snow though, it's not all desert.
Let them build their statue; it's better than what Republicans want which is blood over a bunch of shaped rocks.
Domestic fodder for hardline idiots, it really isn't worth getting worked up over.
I'd much like to know what the plaque says "We gloriously captured these American invaders here on this day.... *they were promptly released the next day" [editline]21st March 2016[/editline]
The significance is propaganda. They should have radioed for help, they probably should have been able to fix the motor, they shouldn't have let themselves drift, like the list of things they could have done to avoid this is pretty big for goddamn us soldiers
