The emergency services are responding to reports of a helicopter crash in south London.
The London Fire Brigade said it had received multiple calls of a helicopter hitting a crane in Vauxhall.
Ex-BBC producer Paul Ferguson said the helicopter "plummeted straight into the ground". People have reported seeing a pall of smoke in the area.
Police said they first received calls at 08:00 GMT and the London Ambulance Service said it was also at the scene.
Transport for London has confirmed there has been an incident.
Mr Ferguson added: "The building the helicopter hit is shrouded in mist."
He said the crane at the top of the building was now hanging down the side of the building.
Witnesses reported seeing debris on the ground.
The BBC's Ross Hawkins said at least four ambulances and many police cars were at the scene.
He said Wandsworth Road near Vauxhall station is closed, with apparent debris on the ground, and a crane at the top of a new high rise development appears to be damaged.
Witnesses wrote about what they had seen on Twitter.
Belinda Moore wrote: "Just cycled in and saw lots of smoke over by Vauxhall, gather it's a helicopter crash, saw it flying low over Chelsea Bridge thought it odd."
Quin Murray said: "Helicopter just hit a crane and crashed a few metres in front of me in Vauxhall. Completely shaken."
a fast-moving aerial object colliding with a hard-to-see very tall long thing in the middle of the air. such a difficult thing to accomplish.
it actually happened during the cleanup of the Chernobyl reactor, one of the helicopters assisting accidentally bumped the cables of a crane, and it shredded the blades.

16/01 never forget
I hope everyone's okay
Holy fuck this is awful, I hope a lot of people were not injured or worse.

the pilot/crew and passengers are almost certainly dead. a crash like that is unsurvivable, i mean just look at all that fire.

I understand that completely, it's kind of a given in this situation, I just hope nobody else is hurt :(
Well this sucks. Also what did they mean by "The building the helicopter hit is shrouded in mist." was it just smoke from the helicopter or was the building horribly damaged?

It's a foggy day, the helicopter probably didn't see the building.
My mum just compared this to 9/11 :downs:

I understand that completly, what I meant was why would you fly through London that low in heavy fog?
2 people confirmed dead
I understand that completely, what I meant was why would you fly through London that low in heavy fog?
Because there are "helicopter lanes" of a certain altitude which helicopters must follow.
-late-
fuck, I go to Vauxhall all the time. :'-(
Oh god I take back all my parody jokes about how this weather was causing things to explode
Jesus christ I feel like a dick now
London Fire Brigade said firefighters had rescued a man from a burning car and he was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
Well that is at least slightly comforting that someone has escaped.
I wonder if the crane had any lights on it at the time, it looks incredibly foggy.

There is rumors going round that the crane had no light or it wasn't functioning.
[editline]16th January 2013[/editline]
Also another explanation for the hele being so low is it is very near the Battersea heleport.
Someone tweeted that helicopters are always flying incredibly low over the area and that an accident was inevitable.
The BBC have just said that the RNLI searching the Thames after reports of a person in the river after the crash.
11 casualites in this, one critically ill, police have said.
No source as of yet - it's on News 24
I feel for the people in the crash and involved. On the videos I have been watching about this I saw some people trying to drive down the street even with all the flames on the ground
The crane it hit was on top of St George's tower. Now it's hanging off the side.

Imagine looking up and seeing tonnes of metal falling towards you from about 500 feet above you.
Hope noone else was hurt.
Holy hell was that foggy! No wonder why the helicopter hit that if it was flying that low. There was no chance the pilot even saw the damn crane.
2 Dead, 4 Injured - one critically according to Sky news.
fuck, I go to Vauxhall all the time. :'-(
I don't go as often but when I recognized the places on video it was just bizarre to look at.

That's remarkably low all things considered.
Wow my dad said some of the wreckage crashed just outside his office block, a few people thought it was a terrorist attack
the sound of this woke me up this morning
