The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has had a "no fly zone" in place in Mayflower, Ark., since April 1 at 2:12 p.m. and will be in place "until further notice," according to the FAA website and it's being overseen by ExxonMobil itself. In other words, any media or independent observers who want to witness the tar sands spill disaster have to ask Exxon's permission.
Mayflower is the site of the recent major March 29 ExxonMobil Pegagus tar sands pipeline spill, which belched out an estimated 5,000 barrels of tar sands diluted bitumen ("dilbit") into the small town's neighborhoods, causing the evacuation of 22 homes.
The rules of engagement for the no fly zone dictate that no aircraft can fly within 1,000 feet of the ground in the five-mile radius surrounding the ExxonMobil Pegasus tar sands pipeline spill. The area located within this radius includes the nearby Pine Village Airport.
An oil company covering up its dirty business, color me surprised
Rico can't escape if they keep aircraft out of grappling hook range.
Wow, they got the Federal Government to cover for them, nice job. I guess it's not that surprising though.
Oil companies make so much profit and mine oil so cheaply, no wonder they have so much shit to cover up.

he can just download the Infinite Grapple mod

Or grab a car from Sheldon.
This sounds so corrupt. A company should not be allowed to be in charge of it's own news.
Especially since the government is involved.
Why do we let them get away with this bullshit?

Because big corporations think that if it isn't on big cable networks (ie CNN, Fox, NBC), the public will be oblivious to it.
Well this is major a PR disaster for them. They don't want anymore getting out than they see necessary.
a nearby hobbyist should fly a homemade uav around and see what's up
A corporation having the power to manipulate a government agency seems a bit... bad, don't you think?
Exxon is the single largest and most powerful company on the face of the Earth, sure, but I still don't like it that they can have this much power.
I wonder how much will it cost to get an image from a satellite?
Also if there parameter doesn't have much of a buffer zone of the spill and it's a clear day then you can fly outside of the no fly zone high enough to see it and take photos( but you'll need a camera to see that far)
Why are we assuming wrong doing? I know its an ~evil oil company~ but you can still fly over the area, just not within 1000 feet of the ground according to the op. I'm assuming its just a safety thing, its probably not a good idea to fly near oil

Judging from this, it looks like there's a media blackout in the area too.

And get them banned? No thanks.
Fly up to 1001 feet.

It isn't so surprising, just depressing really. Money flows though the government like crazy, everyone has a price. Corporations have been running things for a while.
According to the article the reason for the no fly zone is because they need a helicopter to move the clean up crews and spot for oil. Doesn't really seem that sinister to me nor does the spill sound that major.
Just get a 700 foot long rope and attach a camera to the end and attach it to a helicopter 1000 ft up
Or get VICE

I'm sure that the media blackout is for safety too
1000ft is not very high, you can clearly identify ground activity and see stuff in clear detail with a pair of binoculars from 1000ft...
Or grab a car from Sheldon.
Then send that bitch flying off of a ramp and into a chopper.
Is this even legal?
I think this is what they don't want you to see. And no, that's not water.

Quick, hide it before someone declares war for that oil :(
Mm, that all lovely. Oil is good for trees and woodland life, right?

It's what plants crave.
Don't get your shitfits going, the nofly zone is only 1000ft above ground. They most likely only want to prevent people (crash-)landing their planes in oil, where they can't be rescued. From 1000 ft up you can still see the ground perfectly fine and take pictures with any decent camera.
For example, I have taken this picture in a height roughly 400-500 meters above ground with my phone camera (Galaxy S2):
