Updated at 9:25 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan -- Three U.S. Marines were shot dead by an Afghan worker on a military base in southern Afghanistan, an Afghan official told NBC News, raising to six the number of American service members who died in rogue attacks in the country in 24 hours.
he shooting took place on Friday night in the Garmsir district of Helmand province, not far from where three U.S. Marines were killed by an Afghan gunman earlier in the day, Dawood Ahmadi, spokesman for the Helmand province governor, told NBC News' Atia Abawi on Saturday.
In the earlier incident, an Afghan police commander opened fire on the U.S. service members after inviting them to a meeting to discuss security, according to Reuters. Another service member was injured in that attack.
"Let me clearly say that those two incidents clearly do not reflect the overall situation here in Afghanistan," chief ISAF spokesman Brigadier-General Gunter Katz told journalists on Saturday.
Reuters reported that the Marines killed in the latest attack were shot dead by a base employee who turned his gun on them. Military sources said the man had not been wearing a uniform and it was unclear how he got hold of the weapon.
What a dick
Fucking hell, it just never ends. I can't imagine how the troops are feeling being around the Police right now. I'm beginning to think we should adopt a Spetsnaz-style policy: Don't trust anyone who's not your friends, and still keep one eye on your friends.

In another part of the country an ANP policeman gunned down 10 of his fellow Afghans on a base yesterday:

Lets not forget this little incident

Its sad because the afghans are good people. And it simply tarnishes the ANP image.
It's funny because US should not be in Afghanistan in the first place.

I think you meant "sad".
This reminds me of a time a couple years ago when I was over there. You know how we were all on the "we have to develop relationships with the native people and make them fall in love with our cheese burgers" mission? Well I was part of a patrol where we go through various villages and talk to people. Find out their needs, if there's anyway we can help them (food, water, shelter etc), make sure they know we're there to help.
Well, there was this one village where I met this guy. Couldn't have been much older than I at the time (18). He was the friendliest dude... spoke English fairly well. Had lots of questions about our culture and all the cool things we had. We talked the whole time our patrol remained in the village, had a good time.
Anyway, several days later, I was part of a convoy. We started getting shelled by mortar fire. Being an infantry squad leader, and also having sucked an officer's cock, I was lucky enough to have an ACOG on my M16 (most people have iron sights because "anything else is unnecessary and Marines make due" AKA no one cares about us). So I was able to make the shot and take out the mortar team before the designated marksmen unpacked their DMR. We went out to confiscate/salvage/destroy the equipment so no one else could come along and use it against us. One of the guys operating the mortar was the guy I talked to in the village.
Suffice it to say, it really hit home.
Not to belittle the deaths of these people, but I find it really irritating how there's a news article every time several soldiers die and the thousands of civilians that get slaughtered by the military as a whole don't even get a mention. Obviously i know nothing about the specific soldiers in question and their actions but im not surprised stuff like this happens with what goes on there.
Some of you guys are spineless scum i guess.

We should make camps too, and put people we don't trust to work.

Why can't people understand the difference between Afghanistan and Iraq, fucking god damn.
We had a reason to be there but we've had a ticket to leave since we got Bin Laden. We should be gone, but you know how unpacking a gigantic war machine is right?

Damn.
So you took shots at the mortar team, so that means you either made them run off or did you pick them off? Because I could understand how much of a mindfuck that would be to find that guy, alive or dead, fighting against you.

But now it becomes a 'rebuild Afghanistan mission' for the ISAF. And its hard because of all the provinces and shit.
Damaging the relationship between us and the afghan police is a very smart move by the taliban/al queda/whoever it is we're meant to be fighting out there. If we can't trust the people who are supposed to police the country when we leave then what was the point.
But now it becomes a 'rebuild Afghanistan mission' for the ISAF. And its hard because of all the provinces and shit.
We honestly should not be there anymore. We did our time, we gave our blood, we gave them our tax payer money, enough is enough.

Most afghan civilians probably feel the same way, after so many years your average afghan civilian most likely just wants us to go away.

I killed them. When we went up to their position to inspect the bodies and shit that's when I noticed the kid's face.
I killed him and I thought he was my friend. It sucked.

And? We have been preparing to leave since we got Bin Laden, it just takes a while to unpack a war machine.

Well from how you worded it I couldn't tell if that's what happened.
That's the one problem with an enemy hiding in plain sight. You'll never be able to know who is your friend or enemy.
Don't be mad at my assessment of your story, please, but the first red flag that would have went off for me is the guys English fluency, and his questioning. I know when you go in a hearts and mind operation you're trying to appear friendly, but if I ever served I'd never be able to shake that uneasiness of working around an enemy that can simply change clothing and disappear into the masses again.

How about it is because we don't engage in wanton slaughter of civilians? Have you ever heard of ROE?
[editline]12th August 2012[/editline]
This stuff makes me really sad. I can never feel at ease around ANA with all of this going on.

Really makes you wonder if it was planned all along or not. It really sucks. He most likely didn't know that he'd be firing at you at that time either.
Trying to introduce democracy there is a failure. May as well pull out and let them tear each other to peices.

No, I completely agree. I was wary at first, but after our conversation I was pretty convinced he was just a plain ol' kid stuck in a shitty country in a shitty situation. After the engagement when I killed him, it kind of changed my attitude. Not in a bad way, just a little more... cold to them... I guess would be the best word? Not unfriendly or anything... just not so fast in making friends.
I'd just say cautious, not cold.
so how many civilians were killed on the same day??
so how many civilians were killed on the same day??
None. Like I said, we have a very defined ROE. We don't shoot civilians on purpose.
Cautious, wary, careful. All good words.
no one said anyone shoots civilians on purpose
not sure why you instantly brought that up
and bullshit "none"

The word slaughter kind of implies someone thinks it was done on purpose.

Oh look, you're one of those guys.. How about you just leave?
