I love how this kid has no qualms what so ever to tell arguably the most famous astronomer of our generation "no."
I just learned, everything.
He's very wise.
Neil just taught the kid the most depressing thing ever
entropy
more like a 6 foot turket!
this child knows more then i do and im like double his age
mannnnnnnnn
[editline]sds[/editline]
ff im more then double his age
Why does his voice sound so good, regardless of recording quality :D

This is what makes future astronomers, no?
God damn that's an annoying kid
This kid needs to be shot.
Everyone has their phones out filming him, Neil must be so sick of that.
This kid needs to be shot.
What for
The last few minutes were very well said.

2 edgy
Yeah, fuck that kid for having the gall for asking questions. :downs:
People need to start questioning more, especially when it comes to experts. I mean yes I trust Neil to know what he's talking about but it still doesn't hurt to try and debate with him and question what he's saying. And hell, it looked like to me that he was having a blast answering the kid's questions. It's that childlike quality of demanding answers that almost all of us lose as we get older which separate the masses from the select few. You can hear the difference he first says "No", his mom says something like "Don't say that, he's an astrophysicist." She doesn't want to look like an idiot questioning someone who is more educated, whereas the kid doesn't care if he's actually wrong or right.
I can tell I'm rambling at this point, but basically this kid is a badass and so is Neil Degrasse Tyson.

~~So edgy~~
[editline]shit[/editline]
Oh well.
I would like to shake Neil's hand one day.
when he said no I was like "oh shit"
Neil has got to be one of the best speakers I've seen, I could listen to him ramble about astronomy all day.

Not really.
When you're given an answer by someone who knows a lot more than you then you should probably accept it unless you have a really good reason for not doing so. The great figures and scientific mavericks of our time wouldn't have managed to successfully challenge pre-existing notions and ideas without knowledge that they've acquired from previous generations of scientists, which would've naturally required some deference to authority.

The sun revolves around the earth.
No.
The earth revolves around the sun with this new evidence I've found.

I really don't see how this is inconsistent with what I said in my post.

deference to authority is overrated. if i perceive the world is different from the way even a scientist might explain it, i should get a good explanation of why that is. this kid, by challenging neil's answers, is taking the first steps towards true scientific inquiry. he doesn't take even an astrophysicists assertion at face value, he inquires to have it more thoroughly explained.
he is developing skeptic, which is totally cool.

btw before you guys attack me for saying deference to authority is overrated, i mean that you shouldn't take any explanation at face value. you should always inquire. scientists do know a lot, but that doesn't make them infallible and it is up to you to do your research and figure out what's true and what isn't.
He mentioned scuse number, 10x10x10^34. I googled that and couldn't find it, does anyone know the proper spelling?

Skewes'
"No! Actually!" etc. Kinda annoying.

he's a kid and he's excited and he's prolly a bit of a know-it-all.
jeeze guys, cut him some slack. it isn't like you weren't an annoying asshole when you were younger.

Yeah, he's a perfectly normal kid, but that doesn't mean it's not annoying.

Well if we're talking about something that we experience everyday in our lives first-hand then yeh, probably, but if we're discussing astrophysics then you could always ask the other person to explain his point further instead of just saying "no" which kind of gives the impression that you're just shutting down.
Don't get me wrong, single instances like these could make for good learning experiences but I think that if a person repeatedly questions a much higher authority (that is, if the authority in question has no stake in the game) then it's kind of revealing of a character flaw that would hardly be conducive to the scientific process. If a layman (emphasis on layman) is so adamant in disbelieving what a scientist says then they can go and do their own homework, though I get the feeling that most probably wouldn't.
To help you sympathize with my perspective though, I personally loathe the aphorism "It is better to be thought a fool etc. etc." because I think it's one of those stupid catch-all things people like to deploy in order to stifle conversation they don't like.
