A UK university is suspending accreditation for courses at a Ugandan university, in response to proposed legislation against homosexuality.
The University of Buckingham says it has been "increasingly concerned" about the proposed anti-gay bill and its "constraints on freedom of speech".
As such the university says it will no longer validate courses at Victoria University in Kampala.
Buckingham says it will make "viable arrangements" for existing students.
The private UK university says the decision has been agreed with Edulink, the owners of Victoria University.
It will affect seven courses accredited by the University of Buckingham, with around 200 students.
The courses include business management, accounting, journalism and computing.
Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda - but the proposed bill would increase the penalties.
The bill proposes longer jail terms for homosexual acts, including a life sentence in certain circumstances.
World leaders have condemned the proposals and foreign donors have threatened to cut aid if gay rights are not respected.
So basically its punishing students (potential future ones at least) for the stupid shit their governemnt does? That doesn't seem fair.
Yeah I don't think every Ugandan agrees with this.
Seems a bit unfair on the students
If their parents are in the governing body, I don't see a problem with this. But holy shit, these are just people coming from that country.
So let me get this straight, the Ugandan government seeks to increase penalties for homosexual acts, an idea that is founded upon a severe lack of education. This university then seeks to punish them for being homophobic... by taking away the Ugandan youth's education.
Ideas of the government do not represent all of the people under that government.
