• Google: don't expect privacy when sending to Gmail
People sending email to any of Google's 425 million Gmail users have no "reasonable expectation" that their communications are confidential, the internet giant has said in a court filing. Consumer Watchdog, the advocacy group that uncovered the filing, called the revelation a "stunning admission." It comes as Google and its peers are under pressure to explain their role in the National Security Agency's (NSA) mass surveillance of US citizens and foreign nationals. "Google has finally admitted they don't respect privacy," said John Simpson, Consumer Watchdog's privacy project director. "People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents' privacy, don't use Gmail." Google set out its case last month in an attempt to dismiss a class action lawsuit that accuses the tech giant of breaking wire tap laws when it scans emails sent from non-Google accounts in order to target ads to Gmail users.
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/14/google-gmail-users-privacy-email-lawsuit
Yeah, I haven't, for quite a while. More of, one shouldn't expect anyplace public on the internet to offer much privacy these days. I don't think it's okay, but it feels like it's the one battle way too uphill to be fought on international level, and that there are bigger issues in this world. I just hope European legislators might help a bit, but who knows.
NSA: don't expect privacy when using the internet
http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/14/4621474/yes-gmail-users-have-an-expectation-of-privacy People are misreading. What they mean is that when you're a non-gmail user sending an email to a gmail account, you can expect Google server to handle your traffic (duh) and that they have the right to analyse the contents of your email (which is how they make targeted ads in the first place). Gmail users themselves fall under their unified privacy policy.
fuck THIS SHIT moving to bing
The only people who thought email was private, we're those who didn't know how email works.
didn't i WARN YOU all about Google? first its "hey look at this cool corporation, developing neat glasses and phones and being cool", then its "they're monitoring our searches, emails and phonecalls? b-but they're still cool!". before you know it, Google will be after WORLD DOMINATION. CLOSE YOUR GMAILS UNINSTALL CHROME START USING YAHOO! SEARCH
Oh no now all the porn I send to my gmail will be found
Go ahead, read my emails. All the confidential/serious stuff is on an internal webserver at work.
Go ahead, read my emails. All the confidential/serious stuff is on an internal webserver at work.
And so are all the people you've sent mail to?
Maybe I should set up that email that I get with my website...
And so are all the people you've sent mail to?
Yes. Its how we keep everything from leaking.
This sensationalist crap is being seized by conspiracy blogs across the Internet, when in actuality, this has been known since at least 2004, when Google first started displaying targeted ads based on the content of your e-mail messages (and that is exactly what the quote is in reference to: the automated software Google uses to display targeted ads).
Maybe I should set up that email that I get with my website...
yeah which sucks 99.99% of the time
