I'm still doing a lot of experimental things, but right now I'm trying to emulate the original recording using premium sound libraries. My recording: Original: I'm not an idiot, and I know I'll never get anything in as amazing quality as the original recording (due to the immense cost of sound recordng/mixing equipment and paying for actual people to record with their instruments) so take that into account, along with the fact that I can't give the playing as much emotion as I'd like. I just want to make sure the blue prints are there, etc.
sounds like those bassy drops are really overpowering the track and are compressing it to hell. the composition is good itself, and while the vsts sound a little bit artificial thats not really your fault at all. what i can suggest is looking at the eq before you export it to make sure everythings in balance throughout the whole track, and just cleaning everything up in the mixdown to ensure its going ok
everything's fine except the violin, it's just not convincing.
It's from East West Symphonic Orchestra Platinum which is the best strings sound library in the world, probably the last thing I was expecting to hear was that it doesn't sound convincing. (maybe it's outdone by Hollywood strings or the Vienna library, but those are a bit different) Also, the first half is done with a solo Viola for its lower ranges (like in the original) until it changes places with a violin halfway when the higher pitched parts begin. And yes, that's how a Viola actually sounds (I have one). Either way I'll come up with something to bring it out more so it doesn't sound fake to the layman
fake to the layman? uh, no it's not convincing because there's no articulation or feeling in the violin. listen to the real violin on the recorded piece and note how the contour subtly changes due to the bowing by the player. this is what makes it convincing because there's variation upon volume and texture which gives it its flowing character. with a sample the contour repeats precisely in a mechanical manner which gives it an inhuman quality and makes it terribly unconvincing. also it sounds like it's being played right in my ear, while it should sound like it's been played in a room. note how the articulation on the violin is being played. the manipulation of vibrato and volume isn't constant, it changes to add feeling to the piece which gives it its human feeling. the same counts for the Viola
You really didn't need to explain that. As I've said, I'm not prepared to record it on my own so it would capture the emotion and feel it deserves when played by a human being. (plus human error/bowing technique/style/volume detailed in your post) Like you said, as long as we're using samples, it'll sound either loopy or too consistent, neither are good at all for a lead in a song such as this. Can't do much about it until I'm an expert Violinist or really loaded. And yes, it's slightly panned to the right for sound design reasons, (original is panned slightly left) comment on something other than the violin/viola, because even if I wanted to change it, that's a 1-2 click fix. (And if you're really saying "laymen" won't believe its a violin, chillax and go troll somewhere else, culturally literate people like us are the only people who care about the consistency of the vibrato or would pick up on its lack of emotion)
we just tryin to help u man you dont have to argue their opinions
I'm augmentative by nature I suppose lol, I didn't want to sound rude, just addressing the things he pointed out I probably could adjust the solo quite a bit to make it sound like a more emotional performance, but it will have to wait until I get a new computer. I've been writing all of these covers and sampling/mixing them using a shit laptop with ~4gb of ram. I mainly still would like to know what you guys would change, or if you find something I should add (or remove) As long as it isn't related to the performance of the Violin/Viola solo
audiophile opinion: Did you burn-in your RAM before bouncing your mix? Joking aside, you can make that violin sound more convincing, East/West needs some coaxing sometimes, though. Try messing with the ADSR, and DEFINITELY use keyswitch mode when you have a solo instrument. Also check if your DAW has a human playback engine. And automate automate automate.
