So they’re trying the next best thing: fake drug checkpoints. Police in the city of 19,000 recently posted large yellow signs along Interstate 271 that warned drivers that there was a drug checkpoint ahead, to be prepared to stop and that there was a drug-sniffing police dog in use. There was no such checkpoint, just police officers waiting to see if any drivers would react suspiciously after seeing the signs. Authorities say that four people were stopped, with some arrests and drugs seized. They declined to be more specific. “I don’t think it accomplishes any public safety goals,” said Terry Gilbert, a prominent Cleveland civil rights attorney. “I don’t think it’s good to mislead the population for any reason if you’re a government agency.” Nick Worner, a spokesman for the Cleveland office of the American Civil Liberties Union, said his office will be looking further into the fake checkpoints to determine whether anyone’s rights may be being violated. Read this earlier. This is wrong and I hope that they get struck down and sued because of it. Its one thing to have a checkpoint, its another to have a fake one with the sole purpose is to search peoples' cars.
this is hilarious.

If someone turns around at a drug checkpoint sign it's likely they have drugs. I feel like this effort should be redistributed, but it's not nearly so bad I'd wish them to be sued for it.
Good luck, I keep my radar detector in my underpants as soon as it beeps. ...Makes it a bit like a scent tree when I put it back on the windshield.
If you've got nothing to hide why worry?
I hate this reasoning but it's sorta correct in this case since it sounds like you only get searched if you turn around at the sign.
Or they don't want to get held up in the line there, and just avoid it to save time.
Yea I guess I didn't really consider escaping traffic jams.
If you've got nothing to hide why worry?
this can be true but i feel in the context of a war on drugs that spends hundreds of millions in a conflict even more unnecessary than afghanistan, that paying policemen's salaries to trick people into arrests is not a good thing at all
If you've got nothing to hide why worry?
Because its unnecessary and dumb.
If you've got nothing to hide why worry?
By that logic law abiding Americans should allow the government to monitor every aspects of their lives and sacrifice all of their liberties because they won't be negatively affected but criminals will. Everybody has committed a crime. It's almost impossible to have not to.
crimes down, We need to FIND crime. you dont want billy to lose his job do you?
this is dumb as hell
the way I read it they just put signs up and there was no actual checkpoint at all. I don't see anything wrong with that.
So why are drug checkpoints not allowed?
It's Cleveland, not surprised really.
So why are drug checkpoints not allowed?
checkpoints are in violation of the fourth amendment.
checkpoints are in violation of the fourth amendment.
According to; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_checkpoint#United_States_of_America Sobriety checkpoints are considered okay, as long as they follow certain guidelines. Though, I don't see mention of a drug-specific checkpoint. Ten states have made checkpoints illegal though, according to the wikipedia article.

Leave it to the fucking cops to invent ways to skirt laws so they can do what they're specifically prohibited to do.
just because the supreme court (aka a few old guys in suits) decides it's ok doesn't mean it is.
Still, it's been determined to not violate the fourth amendment
Mmmm, fake checkpoints, nice, safeguarding America from those evil drugs!
Still, it's been determined to not violate the fourth amendment
determined by the same group of people who said separate but equal was fine for 60 years
just because the supreme court (aka a few old guys in suits) decides it's ok doesn't mean it is.
Actually it does. When the Supreme court has a decision it becomes the law of the land.
Actually it does. When the Supreme court has a decision it becomes the law of the land.
you don't get what I'm saying. the supreme court is run by people. not every decision they make is the right decision
you don't get what I'm saying. the supreme court is run by people. not every decision they make is the right decision
I agree, but its the decision we have to live with. I dont agree with many laws, but its not my job to decide whats ok and whats not. I just enforce them being impartial to my personal views
Read this earlier. This is wrong and I hope that they get struck down and sued because of it. Its one thing to have a checkpoint, its another to have a fake one with the sole purpose is to search peoples' cars.
I wouldn't say struck down and sued. It's pretty bad to have a police department with no money. But action does need to be taken, more towards specific individuals, or those in command who've allowed this to happen.
I lived in Mayfield Heights for a while growing up. Kinda odd, pretty typical quiet suburb. Doesn't seem like an effective place for such a thing. Then again there isn't much else for them to be doing so I dunno.
you don't get what I'm saying. the supreme court is run by people. not every decision they make is the right decision
We get what you're trying to say, you're saying something is illegal because it violates the constitution despite the fact that the legal entity which makes that decision said it doesn't. You can argue it violates the constitution, fine, but that doesn't change the fact that those who determine law disagree, and therefore your explanation is incorrect
Small town cops will invent plenty of creative ways to escape boredom. In towns like that, you'll see three or four cop cars lined up for a routine traffic stop. "We have an expired license plate. I need backup!"
