Among the most powerful and shocking pictures are those that depict crowds being showered by tear gas, with many people donning surgical masks and holding up umbrellas to protect themselves. The movement has been dubbed the "Umbrella Revolution", characterised as it is by the striking scenes of brightly coloured brollies being used to create shield walls against riot police. Tear gas canisters were lobbed into the masses on Sunday, in a bid to dispel those protesting against Beijing's decision to limit democratic reforms in the Asian financial hub. But today, thousands of people continued to line the streets, having camped outside government offices to sleep after the clashes died down.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-29405195
Tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters are blocking Hong Kong's streets, shutting down its business hub and ignoring appeals to leave. The demonstrations have spread to other areas including a shopping district and a residential area. Riot police withdrew on Monday after overnight clashes in which they used batons and fired volleys of tear gas to try to disperse the crowds. China has warned other countries not to support the "illegal rallies". ... Protesters - a mix of students and supporters of the Occupy Central pro-democracy movement - are angry at Beijing's plans to vet candidates for Hong Kong's 2017 leadership elections. They want a free choice of candidates when they cast their ballots for the chief executive - something Beijing says is out of the question.
Live updates from BBC and South China Morning Post Riot police appear to have largely withdrawn since attempting to disperse the protests yesterday, replaced by regular police officers: [t]http://imgkk.com/i/6rh-.jpg[/t] (Also, that photo shows protesters gathered outside Wan Chai Police HQ, roughly the real-world equivalent of the Wan Chai police station from Deus Ex - coincidentally the protesting is intensifying to the point where they may not be able to contain it)
the more china keeps kicking these people to the curb and just abusing them, the more they will look worse and worse to the world and get more people to protest. also dat deus ex reference
China need to learn to give the people what they want instead of trying to force what they don't want down their throats.
China need to learn to give the people what they want instead of trying to force what they don't want down their throats.
Alternatively just be more clever about it and don't tell them you are vetting the candidates. Learn from the rest.
Alternatively just be more clever about it and don't tell them you are vetting the candidates. Learn from the rest.
Leaks and a hacks are inevitable. Keeping a secret like that would be easy, especially if you have to do it time and time again. Someone would talk or get suspicious when every single candidate stands for the same values. It just takes 1 person to ask questions then spread what they find out.
:( my homeland's government is a piece of shit
I've never seen these firework like kinds of tear gas before
Beijing can not afford another Tiananmen Square controversy. Not to mention a possible pivotal moment for pro-democracy groups on the mainland. Should be interesting on what the outcome will be
I wish them luck in getting meaningful reforms, but I honestly doubt Beijing is going to budge
:( my homeland's government is a piece of shit
....Ireland? Do you have chinese origins or what?
I thought flagdog shows the country you're in when you registered for fp not the country you're currently posting in
Why contain it? Let it spill over into Macau and Tibet let the umbrellas pile up in the streets.
These are interesting times we live in. Best of luck to anyone seeing this from Hong Kong.
the more china keeps kicking these people to the curb and just abusing them, the more they will look worse and worse to the world and get more people to protest. also dat deus ex reference
But haven't they been doing the same thing to Tibetans and the Tankmen for much longer?
But haven't they been doing the same thing to Tibetans and the Tankmen for much longer?
The things happening in Tibet and Beijing have all managed to be reasonably silenced. We all know things happened in Tiananmen and in Tibet, but they were never broadcasted by media at this scale. Which is also why I think that China will not dare to do anything.
As I've said before, Hong Kong was better off with the British [editline]29th September 2014[/editline] just a shame they had a 50 year lease
Beijing can not afford another Tiananmen Square controversy.
Another what? There's no such thing.
As I've said before, Hong Kong was better off with the British [editline]29th September 2014[/editline] just a shame they had a 50 year lease
Depends on what you mean by "better off". The way UK governed HK is more or less the same of what China is attempting to do, except they're including a bit more democracy. Pretty sure the population of HK does not want even less freedom.

Hong Kong's time in British hands was also quite culturally significant, compared to the mainland, Hong Kong's society has been considerably more westernized, something that the PRC seems intent on stomping out.

I think the best thing that could happen is if it simply became independent.

Sure the Governors were all picked by the Westminster but did we ever hear of any shit like this going down during British rule? I certainly didn't
Sure the Governors were all picked by the Westminster but did we ever hear of any shit like this going down during British rule? I certainly didn't
You're hearing this shit because PRC seems to be reluctant in fulfilling their promise to allow the HK people to elect their own representatives, an issue that wasn't really brought up pre-1997. The 2014 reform is still ongoing and nothing has been set in stone yet. Edit: And I'm fairly certain that there were pro-democracy rallies during the 80s in HK, of course not to this extent.

-snip misunderstood post
The British gov might be shitty with all the candidates being the same but at least its slightly better than china.
Thats completely subjective. Did you live in HK during that time? Do you know anyone who did? What's to say much had changed since? HK still has signifigantly more rights than the mainland. It probably hasn't really skipped a beat since the British left if you want to be realistic.

I'll snip
