Russia's strange absence of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) stands out among the world's biggest military spenders. The idea of home-grown, medium-altitude UAV for surveillance and strike is certainly not some US and Israeli fetish. China has the Pterodactyl (also known as Wing-Loong), India has the Rustom. Even relatively smaller spenders, like the United Arab Emirates, has an indigenous medium altitude UAV - the Adcom Smart Eye. In Brazil, Avibras is testing the Falcao. Pick a country and there's probably somebody developing or operating a medium-altitude UAV.
But not Russia.
Some of that mystery was cleared up by a YouTube video uploaded on Friday. It shows the ultimate fate of the Vega Stork -- Russia's answer to the Predator. That was until 18 January 2010, when the Vega reportedly crashed on take-off during a demonstration flight. This video is likely the record of that ill-fated test.
Despite the Stork's demise, Russia's military still appears eager to develop and deploy the country's own medium-altitude UAV. Last month, Vega showed off a brand new UAV concept at the MAKS 2011 air show at Moscow's Zhukovsky airport. This one is called the Vega Ray (shown below). Its design appears similar to the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Searcher Mk-II UAV, although it's not an exact copy. Perhaps Russia will soon join the ranks of militaries with an indigenous, medium-altitude UAV.

Wow really? Did you have to copy China?
Love at the end of the video, the guys are just standing there shooting it with a tiny extinguisher :v:
Also why do russian vehicles, all of them, sound fucking cool?
I love the way it was flailing about in the video.
US should sell them some UAV's.
Seems like an easy way to gain closer relations without giving up anything that they won't eventually make themselves anyways.
you would think they would have tried to test flight it on a day when it wasn't windy.

and because the US is so fucking power hungry, it would mean they have close the same tech we do in that field.
Is it just me or do people in this forum generally dislike russians ?
I hope you aren't all thinking that just because a prototype crashed, they won't make an actual working one.
Yeah, prototyping is all about leaning what not to do in the final product. But still, sorta funny they didn't abort the test when it barely even left the ground.
I wonder what the actual problem was. I can't decide if it just can't fly (due to bad design)or if the remote part of it failed (like they had no control over it).
Actually, the design of the UAV looks pretty cool.

The majority here think russian technology and culture is cool.

No, everyone is paranoid of China though.

Which is why the US introduced ITAR clearence to stop people using their tech. It's a huge dick move in the defence industry in terms of export since any defence equipment sold that uses ANY us kit (including amazingly shims and little shit like that) can be brought up for ITAR clearence.
Still, it's harder than it looks to prototype a UAV.
i like how after it crashes it kinda looks salvagable then it just bursts into flames like something from a movie

I hate Russians, especially in games when they're supposed to use English in the chat or they leave their god damn microphones on and all you can hear is something that sounds like a bird being brutally murdered by a tv.

Our military budget is 698 billion, theirs is 52 billion.
What an embarrassment.
That thing wasn't flying no way no how. It took that long to get off the ground and even beforehand it was wriggling around, then it just spewed infernal shit all over itself the moment it hit the ground. The US has UAVs that can take off by being thrown out of a single hand of a soldier, in fact they've been around for a little over ten years I think. What is so hard to understand? Did they get a five year old on the engineering and aerodynamics jobs here?
Wth, how hard is it to build a plane that can take off on its own.
Prototype this build one within a week that could take off, drop a load and land and you can buy autopilot sets for a model airplane for like 200€.
Maybe they are acting like they dont have one while in fact they do.
It looks like a good quality UAV, or at least it did, before exploding.

I dunno, the surface area of the wings vs the size of the engines looks terrible.
Stubby little wings and these two comparatively large engines. The thing didn't look like it would fly to begin with.

Agreed. I was surprised it made it off the ground at all.

Those are the lightweight UAV's.

Some of the Israeli UAV's are nice too but it looks pretty bulky, look up the Heron UAV.
Those are the lightweight UAV's.
It's a technology comparison.
I love how it burst into flames at the end! hahaha.
Wow, more crappy clones of cool American tech.
It's sad to see fine technology get destroyed.

Just to say when America were making their UAV's loads of them would also have crashed and burned...
