Billed by organizers as "the largest rally yet to protest mass surveillance", Stop Watching Us was sponsored by an unusually broad coalition of left- and right-wing groups, including everything from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Green Party, Color of Change and Daily Kos to the Libertarian Party, FreedomWorks and Young Americans for Liberty. The events began outside Union Station, a few blocks away from the Capitol. Props abounded, with a model drone hoisted by one member of the crowd and a large parachute carried by others. One member of the left-wing protest group Code Pink wore a large Barack Obama mascot head and carried around a cardboard camera. Organizers supplied placards reading "Stop Watching _____", allowing protesters to fill in their own name – or other slogans and occasional profanities. Homemade signs were more colorful, reading "Don't Tap Me, Bro" "Yes, We Scan" and "No Snitching Allowed".
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
Which begs the question: what will?
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
uh, would you rather have all of the US become apathetic and accepting to it rather than protest and rally?
Nothing but destruction of their centers. There's prolly gonna be an American terrorist attack on that building within the next 5 years.
uh, would you rather have all of the US become apathetic and accepting to it rather than protest and rally?
Just don't protest. Go passive-aggressive all the way. Weep terribly as you furiously masturbate while staring into your webcam
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
Outright stopping a bad thing happening isn't what protesting is about. You've missed the point. They're there to demonstrate their unhappiness to send a message to the government and, more specifically, the NSA. Calling them silly is ignorant.
Which begs the question: what will?
Drastic measures.
A refresh of the government

Yea, bring the drones on a stick in! Because that shit is totally happening
Nothing but destruction of their centers. There's prolly gonna be an American terrorist attack on that building within the next 5 years.
nope
Yea, bring the drones on a stick in! Because that shit is totally happening
what is symbolism?
I don't know about military drones, but certainly surveillance drones are beyond symbolism at this point.
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
"Stupid Americans, why don't they ever protest anything?" "Stupid Americans, protesting won't solve anything."
It's about time, glade to finally see some action against the NSA.
But if they don't wait the NSA to watch, Then how will they see the rally?
About damn time. Wish I were there.
gathering together in a big group won't get the nsa to stop watching you its like saying 'hey look at us' silly people
It's a joke, damn guys.
It's a joke, damn guys.
Nope, don't think so.
Actually it was a pretty funny joke, and I feel bad I didn't pick up on it. It's in the "sarcasm" section.
Sarcasm only works on the internet if it's extremely overt.
Sarcasm only works on the internet if it's extremely overt.
Which is sadly not one of Facepunch's strong suit. See: every 3rd post in a feminism-themed thread
Which is sadly not one of Facepunch's strong suit. See: every 3rd post in a feminism-themed thread
FP members used to be really good at using it and detecting it but the ability disappeared around 2009. That's why ITN is a no fun allowed section
FP members used to be really good at using it and detecting it but the ability disappeared around 2009. That's why ITN is a no fun allowed section
Haha, oh wow. There's lots of shit to be nostalgic over.
I don't know about military drones, but certainly surveillance drones are beyond symbolism at this point.
Yeah it still goes beyond the literal. The image of the Drone is basically one of the defining images of modern America and this whole surveillance fiasco.
Which begs the question: what will?
Quick! Everyone, construct suits out of LEDs, it's the only way we'll be able to stop them from looking at us! Or anything, really, at least for like ten seconds or so until their eyes adjust back to normal.

It's pretty much expected in any anti-government-anything rally these days. And any kind of meaning it had, if it did at all, has long been exhausted from it.

I hope that tiny drone has a webcam for broadcasting the protest online.
I dunno, I hear a lot of people are either pretty apathetic when it comes to the NSA stuff because they don't have anything to hide and don't mind the NSA having access to their phones, emails, etc. And I hear quite a few people still who think it's a GOOD thing that they have such a wide intelligence network. Just seems like these rallies are a vocal minority unfortunately, but they're there to raise awareness about I suppose. I mean I can understand the appeal knowing that the NSA has the means to keep tabs on potential threats and etc. but I dunno, just seems iffy to me, personally. Especially with them spying on people overseas who aren't even American. If there was concrete proof out there that it was stopping attacks on the US I'd probably be for it, but until then I don't like the idea, at all.
