In the latest intensification of partisan hostilities, Republicans rammed President Donald Trump's picks to be Treasury and health secretaries through a Senate committee on Wednesday with no Democrats present after unilaterally suspending panel rules that would have otherwise prevented the vote. By a pair of 14-0 roll calls, the Senate Finance Committee approved Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., to be Health and Human Services secretary and banker Steve Mnuchin to be Treasury secretary. Both nominations must be confirmed by the full Senate. Democrats had boycotted Wednesday's abruptly called Finance Committee meeting, as they'd done for a session a day earlier, demanding more time to question the two men about their past financial practices. Before approving the two nominees, the committee's Republicans voted 14-0 to temporarily suspend a rule requiring at least one Democrat to be present for any votes. Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said the Senate parliamentarian had approved the extraordinary tactic and blamed it on Democrats, saying their boycott was "one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen" and "a nefarious breach of protocol."
AP
what exactly did the democrats expect to accomplish with a boycott? they had to know they would do this
It's okay when the GOP does it.
and Big chance Senate will nuke the filibuster for SCOTUS nominees.
Tom Price is pretty shady too so this is a great choice!
It's okay when the GOP does it.
Well duh because the GOP are the good guys and the Democrats are to blame for everything because emails.
Before approving the two nominees, the committee's Republicans voted 14-0 to temporarily suspend a rule requiring at least one Democrat to be present for any votes.
This is not a democracy.

[editline]1st February 2017[/editline] Do the dems talk like this and I just don't notice it because I'm biased or are republican politicians the biggest jackasses when it comes to how they talk about their opposition ever?
Hahahaha. This government is getting worse by the fucking day.
This is not a democracy.
Ain't that great. Don't like a rule? Just temporarily allow it to be broken whenever you need to break it. Wish I could temporarily be allowed to disobey a law of my choosing too.
Ain't that great. Don't like a rule? Just temporarily allow it to be broken whenever you need to break it.
With Trump as President, Fascism is a matter of policy.
fixed that for you.
This sounds awfully authoritarian.
fixed that for you.
Well potentialy that also.
what exactly did the democrats expect to accomplish with a boycott? they had to know they would do this
proved that the republicans are prepared to burn everything to the ground and hopefully when capital hill is on fire those people that support the republicans will finally take a moment of introspection and flip out at the ones with the torches for once
This government is getting worse by the fucking day.
Frankly I think the white house and the capitol building need be surrounded by protest.
proved that the republicans are prepared to burn everything to the ground and hopefully when capital hill is on fire those people that support the republicans will finally take a moment of introspection and flip out at the ones with the torches for once
Heartland person here, nope all protests over there are already seen as "crybaby Liberals", And are already wanting to vote people out who obstruct the American Populist vision.
what exactly did the democrats expect to accomplish with a boycott? they had to know they would do this
Send a message. "We tried to make them listen and look at how they reacted". It's what opposition in my country has been doing and the answer is almost always what the Republicans just did. Ignore that and force the change through even if it means shitting on democratic process and established laws.
Right, just like the Democrats did when they had the power.
Irrelevant, even if they did the thread is not about what Democrats did but about what Republicans are doing right now and will almost certainly continue to do. Being guilty in the past doesn't stop you from raising a good point in the present. People can change with time.
Right, just like the Democrats did when they had the power.
Would you mind explaining to me how that makes this okay?
Right, just like the Democrats did when they had the power.
Or when the republicans denied a supreme court position for months over partisan bickery
Republicans jammed two of President Donald Trump's top Cabinet picks through the Senate Finance Committee with no Democrats in the room Wednesday after suspending a rule that would have otherwise barred them from taking the vote. The tactic seemed a warning shot that they might deploy brute political muscle in the upcoming fight over the Supreme Court vacancy.
Like, how does this happen? What's the point to rules if there's loopholes that you can exploit? :v: I hate this country
What Conservatives would have thrown a fit over Obama so much as thinking about doing they applaud Trump for having the gall to do it. What a weird world we live in. Oh well, at this rate we won't deserve it
Or when the republicans denied a supreme court position for months over partisan bickery
They also threatened to do it for four additional years of Hillary won. Republicans don't care about the rule of law, they care about getting their way.
They also threatened to do it for four additional years of Hillary won. Republicans don't care about the rule of law, they care about getting their way.
Frankly I think there's a possibility of a coup happening in the next four years if they keep up their fascist idiocy. The democrats may have had their downsides, but the shit being pulled here is completely incomparable and should be met with an equal or great resistance.
Right, just like the Democrats did when they had the power.
Except the Democrats never did anything like this. Exactly why the Republicans are doing it now: they weren't pushed under when they needed to be, they waited until they had the opportunity to take the reins, and now here we are. They haven't got the best interests of the country at heart, and they're running wild with power now. That's all they've ever wanted. They just want their way at everybody else's expense and at the expense of the country. This is an authoritarian move, pure and simple. But it's not to be unexpected considering how things have been going for the last (almost) two weeks. Supporting the Republicans anyway or trying to downplay what they're doing here is extremely suspicious under the circumstances we're in nationally today. It's not acceptable.
