Israel secretly deports 1000 Sudanese refugees back to Sudan, where visiting Israel is a grave crime
Israel has "voluntarily" returned at least 1,000 people to Sudan, an enemy country that has vowed to punish any of its citizens who ever set foot in Israel. The repatriation was done secretly, via a third country, over the last few months, without the knowledge of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Haaretz knows the name of the third country, but is withholding it to avoid harming those who returned via this route.
Though Israel claims the people's return was voluntary, this claim was rejected by UNHCR, which says there is no "free will from inside a prison."
Under a recent amendment to Israel's infiltration law, asylum seekers can be jailed for years without trial. Testimony from within prisons indicates that detainees were also denied access to UNHCR, in violation of the UN convention on the status of refugees, which Israel has signed.
The UN's stance on the issue is also clear. Michael Bavli, UNHCR's representative in Israel, warned the Population, Immigration and Border Authority that "deporting Sudanese to Sudan would be the gravest violation possible of the convention that Israel has signed - a crime never before committed."
The UN refugee convention explicitly states that even someone who wasn't a refugee when he first left his country can become one thereafter, if subsequent events - in this case, entering an enemy country - make it impossible for him to return to his country without risking his life.
Such people, known as "refugees sur place," enjoy all the same protections under the convention as people who originally fled their country due to a "well-founded fear of persecution."

Clearly not secret enough if someone found out about it.
Well, one thing's for sure: Ain't that much of a secret anymore

How is this article bias?

To me, it seems clearly anti-Israel.
I'm not defending anyone here, but I like to have my own opinions.

It presents the facts and you say this article is bias? If the facts scare you then you should change your opinion of Israel.

"this article seems biased against violating UN conventions and deporting refugees back to the country they fled from"
Haaretz are radically left winged, so you might say they are biased.
As much as I feel for these refugees, no other country wants to be a safe haven for refugees - nobody complains though right? but when it's Israel, let the riots begin.
FP is biased.

Afaik no other first world country today sends refugees back to Sudan where they know they will face persecution for visiting Israel.
Plenty of countries have to deal with refugees without wanting to, but only Israel, as far as we know (or don't know), has pulled something like this.

While I do believe this is something Israel could do, and I don't doubt the news - there's always the fact that they don't cite any solid sources. They do not write how they came across this information, and that takes away reputability. Especially considering Haaretz has a political affiliation.
I understand the sources need to remain anonymous for protection, but they should dive deeper into how they came across this information to paint us a picture of how trustworthy it actually is.

If the UN is acknowledging this wouldn't it only put more credibility into their article?

Entirely factual articles on Israel tend to appear to be clearly anti-Israel.

It does.
Israel's handling of African immigrants is pretty fucking despicable. They've actually forced incoming Ethiopian women to be sterilized, so they could no longer reproduce.
Having to deal with refugees sucks big time, that's for sure, but sending them back to their country, to their certain death/imprisonment is downright atrocious. Not just denying them access into the country, but accepting and then sending them out. It's not even about economy or politics, or reputation, it's about humanity.
When it comes to Israeli politics, humanity is never one of the top priorities, it seems. Many say that such sacrifices are needed for Israel's survival, although.
Got to admit, one hell of a sacrifice, 1,000 scared foreign people with nowhere to go.

Then Israel doesn't need to survive.

Man, Israel really sounds like a certain country that did terrible things to people not of their own country, which one could it possibly be?
What I've always found annoying is that people would point out that Israel's great for taking in these refugees (ergo the country is more "democratic" than their dirty Ay-rab neighbors) but their treatment of them isn't markedly more enlightened that other countries.
To me, it seems clearly anti-Israel.
I'm not defending anyone here, but I like to have my own opinions.
Well, you might also call the facts of reality anti-Israel.
Israel really needs a reality check and a bop over the bonce it seems.

Seriously?
Please Starpluck, can we start slagging on Israel?
Israel sounds like such a nice little country
Shame they don't do the same here in Australia.
