http://www.cnet.com/products/compute-stick/
LAS VEGAS -- Amidst all of the laptop and PC news that's come out of CES 2015, the quiet announcement of Intel's diminutive Compute Stick comes as something of a surprise. It has tablet hardware and plugs into an HDMI port, offering a PC experience in a tiny space. The Compute Stick comes in two flavors: an $89 Linux version, and the $149 model that's running Windows 8.1 with Bing. There isn't all that much to the Compute Stick. It's very light and not too much bigger than a Google Chromecast. The Stick plugs into a display by way of its HDMI 1.4a port, which will handle streaming duties. Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity lets you pair peripherals like a mouse and keyboard, while 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi gets you onto the web. The Compute Stick can't draw power from its HDMI port, so you'll need to plug in a microUSB cable to keep it powered up. That microUSB slot sits on the left side, flanked by a full-sized USB port and a power button.
Thats one hell of a stick though
Thats one hell of a stick though
Yeah, but that stick that's smaller than a chocolate bar is a self-contained computer as powerful as the iBook G4 released in 2005. That's a heck of a long way in a little under ten years. If you told me in 2005 that I'd be able to get a computer smaller than my wallet that was as powerful as my laptop, I probably wouldn't have believed you.
Is there actual hardware differences or does the windows license simply cost the $60?
32GB SD card and another gigabyte of RAM.
32GB SD card and another gigabyte of RAM.
Oh. Will it be possible to buy the one with full ram, without the windows?
I love my Chromecast, got 2 of them over the holidays.
It's very light and not too much bigger than a Google Chromecast.
that thing is easily twice the size of a chromecast
Oh. Will it be possible to buy the one with full ram, without the windows?
just install your favorite linux distro on top of it
just install your favorite linux distro on top of it
He (like i) may of been thinking of trying to save a few bucks if we have our own windows license already.
Thats one hell of a stick though
I know, it's a pretty big dongle all right.
That's way more powerful than a G4, Bay Trail can even run crysis, I wanted to mod my iMac G5 someday to one of these bay trail sticks, the display is basically DVI/HDMI
I'm thinking about tossing one into my Mac Cube case to use as an HTPC. Wonder if that USB port can do power and data simultaneously?
Ugh, why couldn't they have just made this into a little box and given people USB/ethernet?
Ugh, why couldn't they have just made this into a little box and given people USB/ethernet?
You should look at UCFF PCs instead. It's a 4" square form factor with Intel mobile processors, much more suited for the kind of thing you would be looking for if you want USB/Ethernet.
but does it run doom
What is the point in these sticks when pretty much any TV over 32 inches is with a Smart TV xD
Is it a lot more powerful than Raspberry Pie?
He (like i) may of been thinking of trying to save a few bucks if we have our own windows license already.
probably using win8.1 Bing, unlikely Intel is paying much or anything for the license.
Is it a lot more powerful that Raspberry Pie?
Yes. The RasPi has a 700Mhz processor and up to 512mb of RAM. Why is windows more expensive when windows is/will be free on devices under nine inches? Unless there are major hardware differences idk
Dude holy shit You can use steam in home streaming on this
What is the point in these sticks when pretty much any TV over 32 inches is with a Smart TV xD
My 8-year-old TV disagress. ...I need to buy a new one dammit.
Dude holy shit You can use steam in home streaming on this
Heck, you can use Steam on this. And it'll actually play games. The Steambox never stood a chance.
What is the point in these sticks when pretty much any TV over 32 inches is with a Smart TV xD
because smart TVs are annoying and have bad interfaces.
Where the heck is that bad reader rating when you need it?
??
I guess that's useful if your television is a touch screen...
??
It has already been posted that it has more storage and ram as well.
??
The Windows version has twice the amount of RAM and SSD space. Which is sort of necessary. 32 GB is pretty cramped for Windows as it is, and 1 GB is only pleasant with Metro apps.
