The actual story of the origins of the name is that in 1883 after a massive storm in Atlantic City, NJ. A little girl came in asking for taffy, but the owner said "all I have is Salt-water taffy." The girl excitedly bought all the taffy, and the owners mother having heard the discussion liked the name and so it kept.
One of the few things good about AC, NJ.
