security audit of a US critical infrastructure company last year revealed that its star developer had outsourced his own job to a Chinese subcontractor and was spending all his work time playing around on the internet.
The firm's telecommunications supplier Verizon was called in after the company set up a basic VPN system with two-factor authentication so staff could work at home. The VPN traffic logs showed a regular series of logins to the company's main server from Shenyang, China, using the credentials of the firm's top programmer, "Bob".
"The company's IT personnel were sure that the issue had to do with some kind of zero day malware that was able to initiate VPN connections from Bob's desktop workstation via external proxy and then route that VPN traffic to China, only to be routed back to their concentrator," said Verizon. "Yes, it is a bit of a convoluted theory, and like most convoluted theories, an incorrect one."
After getting permission to study Bob's computer habits, Verizon investigators found that he had hired a software consultancy in Shenyang to do his programming work for him, and had FedExed them his two-factor authentication token so they could log into his account. He was paying them a fifth of his six-figure salary to do the work and spent the rest of his time on other activities.
The analysis of his workstation found hundreds of PDF invoices from the Chinese contractors and determined that Bob's typical work day consisted of:
9:00 a.m. – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos
11:30 a.m. – Take lunch
1:00 p.m. – Ebay time
2:00-ish p.m – Facebook updates, LinkedIn
4:30 p.m. – End-of-day update e-mail to management
5:00 p.m. – Go home
The scheme worked very well for Bob. In his performance assessments by the firm's human resources department, he was the firm's top coder for many quarters and was considered expert in C, C++, Perl, Java, Ruby, PHP, and Python.
Further investigation found that the enterprising Bob had actually taken jobs with other firms and had outsourced that work too, netting him hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit as well as lots of time to hang around on internet messaging boards and checking out the latest Detective Mittens video.
Bob is no longer employed by the firm.

This guy is my new hero
Living the fucking dream. I am so jelly.
magnificent bastard
I took a career key test today at school, but none of the options included eBay time or Facebook updates. Man what bullshit.
Smart man.
Pretty fucking corrupt of him but have to admire the dedication to laziness.
God damn, had they thrown a Walmart mention in there, that man would have to change his name to America.
It's rather disgusting how little of his salary went to the actual people working; I can't feel anything but disgust. It reminds me of those multi-millionaires that rip off the workers employed under them just to keep higher profit margins for themselves.

That doesn't mean that he wasn't pretty darn clever.
I wonder if this was what Bill Gates was talking about getting a lazy person to do the job.
It's like ancient Rome V2.
That doesn't mean that i wasn't pretty darn clever.
You're right: it doesn't. It was absolutely clever, but that doesn't mean the practice was any less immoral. But whatever, this is just my personal opinion and view of the situation, and yours is just as good as mine.

Of course it was immoral. I absolutely agree with that. But the fact that he found that loophole is pretty damn clever.
Well fucking played, except for getting busted.
Okay, that's breaking limits of laziness with magnificent cleverness.
I tip my hat off to this sly fox.
I'll admit it was clever of him, but none the less he damn sure deserves to lose his job(s). My only question is how he managed employee reviews and those sort of things. He was considered an expert in lots of languages (obviously, since he probably contracted different people for different tasks) so what would he do if he was taken in to do some head-to-head consulting and stuff?
something tells me, that had he made a VPN home first as opposed directly letting the chinese log in, they wouldn't have found it out.

Yeah. Only problem might be time difference- why is Bob working when others sleep?
But thats easier to explain I guess.

Some people (like me) have a irregular sleep schedule
Work smart, not hard.
that sounds like the plan for me

Alright I don't know how this will be received but what is the problem with this? Why should he pay them more? They accepted the job with that pay. If he was withholding payment, yea he's a dick. But if they both agreed on the amount, what is the issue with it?

I dont think so. He had a six figure salary, one fifth of even $100,000 is $20,000, which is still ALOT of money to the average person living in China.
Its not like he was forcing them to either, they were happy enough to do the work for that sum of money.
Pretty fucking corrupt of him but have to admire the dedication to laziness.
Its pretty genius really, corporations do this shit all the time to cut costs and increase profit (out-sourcing). This guy just took the idea and applied it on a smaller scale and it worked for him..
I can't imagine how chill and happy this dude was. Get paid a bit salary all while just surfing the web..
That doesn't mean that i wasn't pretty darn clever.
vs. those people getting even less doing an even shittier job?
this sounds like something right out of a Dilbert cartoon
I like this trend so I outsource my postings to mister Rajmahalik of India. Good day sirs.
It's nothing new; businessmen have been doing this all the time.
Actually the most popular country to outsource work to is India. What with their perfect English comprehension and understanding they can get the job done faster.
There are actually companies in India specifically made for this reason. You can hire a personal organizer and assistant that lives half way across the world. They will do your shopping, research your next vacation destination and calculate costs, they do your taxes, settle your bills and even organize your child's school and after school schedules.
