There will be no grandfather clause so an 18-year-old who can smoke legally now will not be able to do so legally as of January 1, when the law takes effect.
"Most people who begin smoking, about 99 percent, start before age 21, so this will help our young people delay starting tobacco use," said Lola Irvin, the administrator of the chronic disease prevention and health prevention division of the state Department of Health.
D'Angelo Beltrame, 19, an e-cigarette user who works at the E-Cig City store in Kalihi, lamented the approval of the new law.
"I won't even be able to vape in my own shop. So yeah, that's going to really affect me," Beltrame said.
Good.
the only thing that sucked about this in NY is that it also bars people from buying vapes (even though i understand why, but still, i just wanted some 0 nic vape)
like this will do shit, it's super easy to get cigarettes
hey im 18 in hawaii

gotta hoard em while i can!
This'll definitely stop them!
I knew plenty of kids in high school who didn't smoke simply because they were worried they'd get caught. Sure, perhaps they were exceptions, but they do exist.
Not to mention it's a horrible health hazard that should have already had a law like this in place in the first place, but that's another issue.
[editline]20th June 2015[/editline]
Smoking is bad for you, whether you want to recognize it or not, and it harms other people as well. Second hand smoke is a serious problem and I couldn't give a shit if you say you make sure you 'never smoke around people unless they're cool with it' or some shit, if you think the rest of the smoking population - especially kids - give a shit and do the same, you're delusional.

Of course smoking is unhealthy: everyone knows that. Yet we as humans still consume hard alcohol, eat fatty foods, sit in chairs all day, watch mindless TV, drink sodas; and we do it almost completely by choice. Thinking about long term health is never an immidiate factor. You said it yourself, kids were scared of getting caught: not of the health risks. The law is only going to prolong the inevitable habits.

Alcohol doesn't pollute the air around you as you consume it, stick to the environment, and other nasty shit. It's also not nearly as unhealthy. Neither TV nor fatty foods do that either.
You're pretty ignorant if you think these things even compare.

friendly reminder that second hand smoke is more deadly than first hand

Yes, smokers are aware that second hand smoke is a thing, which is why some of us try and be courteous about it.
Also alcohol is extremely unhealthy, but I drink it, because that is what humans do, we like to feel good.
Also, what do you think about E-Cigarettes?
What's funny is that most of Facepunch would drop the US drinking age to 18 but rates winner when smoking goes up
What's funny is that most of Facepunch would drop the US drinking age to 18 but rates winner when smoking goes up
the basic act of drinking doesn't hurt anyone, only when the person is enabled with another, dangerous object

A drunk person's own bare mitts can be pretty dangerous

i don't know about you, but i'm not too fond of either, so try not to generalize considering you have nothing to back that up
A drunk person's own bare mitts can be pretty dangerous
well, there are people that have little enough control to punch someone in the face, those mits are probably pretty dangerous as well
building muscle is seen as a good thing but what if someone uses that to run away decking motherfuckers?

This fucking facepunch hivemind is just the worst, right? Facepunch is such a hypocrite.
What's funny is that most of Facepunch would drop the US drinking age to 18 but rates winner when smoking goes up
If I walk past someone drinking a beer that doesn't affect me.
I can't go a day without a smoke, but it does seem logical to raise it to the same age as the drinking age.
Fuck the age limit, if people want to fuck their bodies up it's not my problem. This won't really do shit anyways because they are still going to find a way to get the cigarettes.
They're 18, they're legal adults. I don't see why we should raise the age of smoking further. The drinking age needs to come down too. Why did America chose such an arbitrary number of 21? At least 18 makes sense with the graduation of high school and all.
[editline]21st June 2015[/editline]
The fact that there is no grandfather clause in this is fucking retarded too. Hope you enjoy having three age groups worth of smokers stupidly pissed off that they can't get their cigarettes anymore. Good job government. Another life saved. Man i'm fucking glad you're there to protect me from my bad decisions.
At 18 you can vote, join or draft into the military, and go to prison or be sentenced to death.
If you can do all of these things at 18, I think its pretty hypocritical to say you can't smoke or drink.

You are grandfathered in to it. So once you are able to do it they can't take it away from you same thing happened to my dad a few months after he turned 18 they changed the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 but since he able to buy it legally at 18 they couldn't take that privilege away it will only count for people who were not 18 before the law came into effect.
Edit: nevermind I'm dumb..

The first line of the snippet would suggest otherwise.
I'm pretty sure most people start smoking at about 16 anyway. Not sure if this will have a significant effect.
Can we at least swap it with the drinking age though? Having to be 21 to drink is pretty dumb.
The first line of the snippet would suggest otherwise.
Well fuck I completely over looked that and the fact that they don't have that it is pretty dumb taking it away from someone who could be 19 or 20 and have been able to legally smoke for years.
I see this as a baby-step towards some proper restrictments/bans on smoking.
Even if you disregard the health risks (goverment babysitting arguments, go!) other people are often forced to breath in the smoke. It's every goverments duty to protect its citizens, which is why completely banning public smoking would make complete sense to me.

It's to what extent that the government should protect it citizens is what the big argument it. I've got a pretty loose approach to governmental intervention, i still believe business owners should be able to chose if people are allowed to smoke in their establishments for example, and some people think that the government should ban public smoking, in ignorance of the fact that most of second hand smoking illnesses occur when someone is living with a smoker, not standing 3 meters away at a busstop.
Can goto war and lose my legs, can vote for shitty politicians, can buy firearms and explosives, but I cannot drink or smoke.
Why not actually try to encourage vaporizers, and make smoking normal cigarettes outside your household illegal, and using vaporizers outside the household in public allowed?

The health effects/risks/benefits if vaporizers are still in debate.
