A fraternity president at Cornell University was charged with sexual assault after an alleged attack at the Psi Upsilon house on campus last weekend.

Wolfgang Ballinger, a 21-year-old junior from New York, was charged with first-degree attempted rape, first-degree criminal sex act with a helpless victim, and sexual misconduct, according to charges listed with the Tompkins County, N.Y., jail.

The university’s Interfraternity Council unanimously passed a measure Tuesday, and its president, Blake Brown, sent a statement: “The Interfraternity Council leadership, in partnership with all 36 chapters, unanimously agreed to reaffirm our community’s commitment to eradicating sexual violence from our campus. To take a lead in this effort, the Interfraternity Council mandated that all fraternities be trained in consent education, sexual assault prevention, and bystander intervention training by two student-led organizations, Cayuga’s Watchers and Consent Ed, by the end of the academic year in order to be recognized as an active chapter.
If you're the kind of person who'll commit sexual assault, no amount of consent ed or SHARP training is going to help you.
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
If you're the kind of person who'll commit sexual assault, no amount of consent ed or SHARP training is going to help you.
Pretty much this. These frat groups and their shitty attitudes need to be broken up and discarded.
If you're the kind of person who'll commit sexual assault, no amount of consent ed or SHARP training is going to help you.
Did you really just say all people who commit sexual assault are incapable of learning why it's wrong to sexually assault other people
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
your joking right, can't tell because this is SH?
Some of the inter-frat organizations have some very bad networks. Some breed a terrible and damaging culture and it doesn't help with today's "hook-up" culture that women are being treated more and more like simple fuck-sleeves.

no???

if you're in a shitty frat maybe
Did you really just say all people who commit sexual assault are incapable of learning why it's wrong to sexually assault other people
Probably. Are you going to actually argue otherwise or are you going to keep trying to preemptively make him look like an imbecile so you don't have to address his point?
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
That's a pretty gross generalization. There are plenty of absolutely scummy frats, but not everyone who is involved in one is automatically a potential rapist.
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
What a thoughtful, nuanced position you took there.
Jackass.

I helped create this program from the ground up. Most if not all fraternities on my campus were involved with It's On Us.
Yes, there is a huge problem with sexual assault in Greek life but calling all fraternities "cult like hives for rapists" is so stupid.

Seriously?
Have you all never even given fraternities a chance? Rushed? Been to University? If you just read the headlines youre going to hate fraternities, because the media hates fraternities.
If you're the kind of person who'll commit sexual assault, no amount of consent ed or SHARP training is going to help you.
if you'll knowingly commit sexual assault, sure. but the name of consent education is kind of a clue as to how it's used - it's not going to fix those people because it's not meant to, and probably nothing outside a mental institution could. it's for outliers after you do everything else, the guys who say "but i'm not feeding the seals, i'm just throwing coins into their preserve." just to be as clear as possible on something that could turn really bad otherwise and put people at risk. used effectively it's like flossing your teeth, or a final remark at the end of a press conference.
redundant
frats are what the people in the frat are. if you fill a frat with a bunch of bro dudes who peaked in high school then yeah you'll find a lot of shitty people
a few of my friends are in frats (beta theta pi and triangle mainly) and they're genuinely really Good Dudes. i've also hung out with their frat and they also are Really good Dudes. if i didn't have to pay out the ass to join i probably would have rushed beta!
beta also has a really good rep when it comes to sexual harassment and hazing. whenever beta chapters have incidents of sexual harassment or hazing they get closed. they even have a program that encourages anti-hazing and anti-harassment.
don't generalize frats. don't generalize anything
Charged doesn't equate to convicted. Jumping to conclusions because of a stereotype is counterproductive.

"Of course he was a rapist, he's in a fraternity"

"people should learn tolerance towards ______"
"except any organization made up of male members"

Interesting read for you to peruse.

Wow. If anyone said anything similar concerning Muslims or immigration, there would be a shit storm.
"Wolfgang Ballinger" lmao

So you have to pay out the ass to hang out with "friends"? Sounds great...

Somebody didn't get a bid.
i might be exaggerating but yeah it's pay for friends
which might not be too bad but i'm able to make friends so
[editline]7th February 2016[/editline]
i mean it's probably worth it. my beta friend seems to be enjoying it. idk
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
The frat council reaffirmed its position on eradicating sexual violence.
And exactly zero people are surprised, frats are cult-like hives for rapists
Have you ever actually been to fraternities before?
Sure, some of them are like that, but it's certainly not the majority.

so a middle aged woman from 23 jump street "crashes" a frat party at a sports bar, watches kids make out for 3 hours without talking to anyone, and leaves before midnight
sexual assault is over

yeaaaaaaaah no. like any organization you gotta pay dues to keep it afloat. Wanna drink the house's alcohol? Wanna be able to use the house whenever and however you please? Wanna eat the house's food?
nothing's free buddy. if you couldn't pay for your dues and had to disaffiliate in order to earn money, your brothers aren't going to suddenly give you the cold shoulder until you fork over cash. just don't expect to have the same privileges as a dues-paying member. never understood how people can't understand that, especially people who've never been to a university, let alone independents

That is a gross exaggeration created by your own confirmation bias.
