Tony Abbott has threatened to call a double-dissolution election if a hostile Senate thwarts his Government's deep spending cuts and tax rises. While acknowledging a need for "horse trading" over the Budget, the Prime Minister predicted the gaggle of independents who will hold the balance of power from July will roll over because they risked losing their seats in a fresh poll. "What we won't accept though is an attempt to completely frustrate the business of Government," Mr Abbott said. "I don't believe that they will try to completely frustrate the business of Government because if there was an election again, hardly any of them would win their seats. "I'm not saying that the coalition would necessarily get a majority in the Senate, although you never know if there were an election on the issue of who runs the country - the Government or independents in the Senate." Labor, the Greens and the Palmer United Party have threatened to block key measures in the Budget. All are opposed to the $7 Medicare co-payment.
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/national/a/23521445/double-dissolution-threat-over-budget/ For those unaware: A double dissolution is called if there is a deadlock between the house of reps and the senate, the government can request the Governor-General to dissolve both houses and call an election Malcolm Fraser is the only Prime Minister in Australia to advise a DD and succeeded back in 1974
Do it, Tony. Abbolish yourself.
Bill Shorten called his bluff. The people really aren't happy with the Coalition going to the election with lots of promises and ending up wanting to do the complete opposite. But saying that, the Coalition would have a mandate to pass the budget if they were elected back into government, and I would respect that (even though I never give an early prefetence to Coalition candidates in elections).
WOW he is essentially throwing himself and his government to the wolves (aka the general public / voters) who've been calling for blood ever since these budget reforms were announced. On top of that, many other issues which have marred the liberal's comeback into power since 2013, it's obvious they may not win this if the budget is put to a vote of confidence in both houses.
That is a real threat for the independents though, it would be pure luck for them to regain their seats. No-one voted for the Sports party or the Motoring enthusiasts party in the first place, and I doubt people would put their preferences the same way again. It would be suicide for Tony too, but it is a real threat for them.
Do it, Tony. Abbolish yourself.
He'd have no choice but to call for new elections if the Senate blocked any supply bill. All he's doing here is trying to look brave. The most sensible way to prevent those parties from riding a wave of preferences towards a quota is to implement a preferential group ticket system. Until then, micro parties will still come up with deals to manipulate the system.
It'd definitely be a boon for the Greens and the PUP but I don't think Tony has the will (or the guts) to go nuclear

Abbott should do it. He would then lose
You Aussies have my sympathies. Abbot is a fucking loon.
And Harper sounds like a tard as well
Wasn't there a large upswell of remorse from people who elected Abbott after he immediately started fucking with things after taking power? Harper is so much of a puppet for big business you can sometimes actually see the arm up his ass when looking at CBC footage.

Let's excommunicate this Abbott. Abolish Abbott. Perform a late term Abbott-ion. Much Ado Abbott Nothing. (in case you couldn't tell I'm glad there's a chance we're not going through with this awful budget)
It amazes me that this guy is the leader of an actual country.
I actually think a double-dissolution would make my day. Abbott would get roasted.

Australia has this national hatred towards liars and back stabbers. And he has kind of being both recently. It wouldn't end in his favour.
more importantly, this means another chance for FTTP  (i think)
this is fantastic. he needs to get kicked out asap.

I'm willing to bet this is merely a bluff. He knows he would lose if a DD was ever done.
Abbott still has a lot of support though, which is hilarious after how retarded he is. I doubt they'd still lose, it'd just turn out to be another hung parliament at least veering slightly liberal. I'd prefer if libs just got a competent figurehead and got rid of Tony. That being said anything would be better than Bill Shorten as PM, he's just as bad if not worse than Abbott in terms of being a hypocrite. But yeah this isn't going to happen, it'd be a gigantic waste of time and money. I'd rather the term be served then have him kicked out and a better candidate run in his place next election.
Australia has this national hatred towards liars and back stabbers. And he has kind of being both recently. Interesting, but I'm going to be nice (to him, a rare thing) and say that this is a mere bluff.

What he said was taken completely out of context, it wasn't said in a brushing-off sort of way, it was more an earnest comment. Although his reaction was pretty weird, looked like he was having a seizure. Kinda feel sorry for him because he probably has a speech impediment when he's under stress, I think he got professional help though, because it used to be really bad.
