South Korea has taken down a tower at its border with North Korea which has in the past been decorated as a Christmas tree by Christian groups.
The 60ft (18m) tower has previously been covered in colourful lights at Christmas and topped with a cross.
The North, which is officially atheist, saw this as religious and political propaganda and threatened to shell it.

only in korea,
cas if it was here the satanists would threaten to light it on fire or make a satanic Christmas tree next to it
Kim Jong Un confirmed for Grinch.
EDIT: Wait, no, it's Sud Korea at the border with Nord Korea, not the other way around. Kim Jong Un nonconfirmed for Grinch.
EDIT2: No wait it's the north that is atheist, so Kimg Jong Un reconfirmed for grinch.
This source prived my of all of my reading skills.

A christmas tree is more of a pagan, seasonal decoration. I don't think satanists would care about a Christmas tree display.
Wow, there's a War on Christmas after all?
...Fox News was right?!
NK isn't atheistic, Supreme Leader Kim is their god. :v:
I would shell it to bits too, it's fucking October, fuck off with christmas decoration before December
Every fucking mall plasters itself with Christmas decoration in November
I have nothing against Christmas but the way retail handles it does wake the worst anti-consumerist Leninist thoughts in me
Sounds like the Onion.

Kinda funny how Christmas has come full-circle.
First, it was a pagan holiday turned into a Christian celebration which in turn has become so commercialized in modern times that it's a casual day of grace for all.
Kin Jon Un is the Orange Lantern now
How Kim Jong Un Shelled Christmas
That's a pretty obnoxious tree IMO. However, South Korea shouldn't be letting the North dictate freedom of expression in their own country. If it were up to me, I would call their bluff. I highly doubt that they would shell the tree anyway. And if they did, it would simply end up putting the North Koreans in an even worse diplomatic position than they are currently in.

It's better not to, since
1. people could get injured if they go through with it.
2. North Korea being even more isolated doesn't actually help anyone, and in the worst case may cause a crisis that kills a huge amount of people.
oh fuck off christmas decorations are to be put starting 20th December-7th January for catholic and 25th December-20th January for orthodox and any that is put outside of this period should be nuk'd

I mean it's not hard to direct counter-battery fire, and honestly it would send a message to North Korea that the South is not taking any more shit. Now's the perfect time to do it, there was a questioning of Kim Jong-un's leadership very recently, there's been growing dissent in the government against him, and with China's interests currently elsewhere... well, basically North Korea's in a terrible position to do anything.
This is the perfect time to be firm, but also willing to talk. Sending a message of "no, we will not remove the tree and threats of force will be met with force, but we are willing to discuss the situation with you," is a whole hell of a lot more productive than basically going "oh, so sorry! Please don't hurt us, we'll remove the tree!"

If the South retaliated in any serious way then the North would probably take it as a full out declaration of war and invade. You have to be careful in a situation where a message of "this is enough" can be misunderstood quite substantially.

The south's military is so much more powerful than the north it's practically taking a knife to a gun fight.
I agree with North Korea. Christmas isn't for another two months. Bring back the giant fake spiders, spooky skeletons and ghosts! Halloween is best holiday.

Orthodox doesn't do any christmas decorations though.

If the North attacked, in the opening minutes they would level Seoul. They have an a lot of artillery just sitting pointing at that city.
God damnit

No, they wouldn't.
And here's one more, for good measure. A much longer, but more interesting report.
Unless the North have drastically and secretly improved their ability to deliver nuclear payloads, Seoul probably will be standing after a hypothetical conflict.
How much more is this charade gonna last...

Man, they start getting ready for Christmas earlier and earlier every year.

Meet my Christmas tree. I bet yours doesn't even plug into a wall.

Basically a hunk of metal with some wiring, LEDs, and decorative balls stuffed inside it. It stands proudly at about 1' 4" height, yeah.
