Officials in Fairfax County, Va., apparently hoped to use the cover of Super Bowl weekend to help them continue to downplay the murder of a citizen by a public servant.
Late last Friday night, the county dumped an estimated 11,000 pages of documents, plus audio and video files, related to the Aug. 2013 death of John Geer, who was shot by police while standing in the front doorway of his home after officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute. (The documents can be found here.)
Jeff Stewart, a Fairfax resident and witness to the killing of Geer, whom he describes as his best friend, says the document dump was "the opposite of transparency, [disguised] as transparency."
"They do it now," he says, "just throw thousands of pages out there, because they know nobody will read it."
One sentence in and we've gone full tinfoil. Cutting-edge reporting from "theconcourse dot deadspin dot com". But surely their fact-checking can't suck as much as their prose, right? Let's double-check.

As the officers approached, Geer held up a holstered handgun and, according to both officers, said, “I have a gun; I will use it if I need to because you guys have guns.”
Oops. By the way, this happened a year ago.
Why does anybody take these sites seriously? This is a personal blog; there's no accountability or journalistic standards.
This is horrific, especially considering I live in Fairfax and didn't hear about this.
I wonder why nobody else in my area is talking about this.
I live in McLean which is part of Fairfax County. Didn't even here about this.
I recommend reading the Washington Post article over the one in the OP, mostly because the OP's source is an anti-police blog that loves to leave out key information that paints a realistic picture of the events that transpired.
No mention of how he had a gun at his feet the entire time either, here's a photo of his entry way.

After he was shot he shut the door to his house, meaning he could've easily retrieved his revolver. Doesn't surprise me they took their time trying to call him or get a robot to check on his condition before sending people in. Not to mention he had a gun safe with 7 rifles in it.

How and why Geer died that afternoon in August 2013 after police responded to a domestic dispute at his home have remained a mystery, as police and prosecutors have declined to comment on the case for 17 months. But Friday night, under a court order obtained by lawyers for the Geer family, Fairfax released more than 11,000 pages of documents that shed new light on the police shooting.
This took 17 fucking months for actual information to come out. What does that say about the communication between police and citizens?

Now it's going to take another 12 months for the guy to go to court
Much of the evidence in the case is now public before any decision has been made about charging him which is uncommon in such cases.
You're not supposed to release this information before the case is wrapped up. In fact, doing so is extremely rare and often frowned upon in the judicial system...
This is an oddity in that the information was released publicly.
I sort of live in the area and I don't remember hearing about this, fairly odd. Gonna try and read up on it some.
Combined with information they received that Geer had told Harrington about Geer perhaps wanting to commit “suicide by cop”, this brought a raft of other officers from the West Springfield police station, who took up positions around the townhouse, followed by K-9 units in the back, the helicopter and SWAT team on standby, the records show.
If that's the information they received, I can see why they wouldn't be too anxious to go into the house of a guy who just slammed the door closed and had access to some weapons.
But the info seems kinda sparse, and I don't really see anything pointing towards whether he deserved to get shot or not. One cop said he made a move for his waistband, one says he didn't.

This is definitely sketchy, though. Not something someone with good intentions would say. That with the supposed desire for suicide by cop sort of makes this whole deal even more unclear. Wish we had a video of it.

Welcome to the justice system. Nothing is fast, nor will it ever.

Well I don't know much about the justice system. Is this guy being charged with anything, even?
don't see why he should be
