Veteran actor Sir John Hurt has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The 75-year-old, who was Oscar-nominated for his role in 1980's The Elephant Man, said he would continue working despite the diagnosis.
"I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team," he told the Press Association.
Hurt, who starred as the War Doctor in Doctor Who in 2013, added he would continue with his professional work.
"I am continuing to focus on my professional commitments and will shortly be recording Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell (one of life's small ironies!) for BBC Radio 4," he said.
I hope he pulls through. We don't need any more deaths.
Jesus christ, what.
He is a fantastic actor and I love everything I've seen him in.
Get well soon!
I hope the caught it early enough.
It's a horrible cancer to live with, cured or not.
Love John Hurt. Many actors have played The Doctor in Doctor Who, few nail it perfectly in their first and only episode. Great in Alien too. Any film is blessed to have some John Hurt.
I always thought if they made the Belgariad into a film or TV series he'd be the perfect Belgareth.
Still better than a chestburster.

Jokes aside, he is a terrific actor, glad to hear he remains optimistic, I can't say I would be able to.
Ah please no, he is seriously my second favorite "veteran" actor but sadly the person who stood first on my list died a few days ago...
First saw him in V for Vendetta, immediately loved his acting! Hopefully he will pull through.
Shit :( he lives in my familys home village in North Norfolk and donated £300 to my sister's fund for going to the National Youth Theatre over Summer a few years back. I hope he pulls through.
That must hurt like a bitch
Oh fuck no!
We've lost enough already
They are not taking John Fucking Hurt!
Don't take him from me, it's not his time yet :(

Apparently it was caught in it's early stages.
We can't lose John Hurt. Not yet.
I dunno exactly what it is, but I love the sound of Hurt's voice. Sucks to hear that this has happened to him.
Are they sure it is cancer?

"for this moment i am the doctor again" :(
Wish he had a longer stint in the show
Isn't pancreatic cancer the most deadly you can get?
even if he lives there is no way this isn't going to completely ruin his life
something like this is a death sentence
still, for a 75 year old, who is an actor, that is a good age to die. So many people will remember your legacy.

Yeah. My cousin just died from pancreatic cancer last week. Hardly even lasted a year...
Pancreatic cancer is one of those ones you don't come back from.
John Hurt, you are a king among men and a genuinely great person and you will be missed when the time comes.
In the mean time, fight as hard as you can.
I didn't even know John Hurt did Doctor Who. I remember him from the animated LOTR films, Alien, and The Black Calderon. Hope he recovers.

Yes, only 20% survive the first year in all stages. It is very sad that this brilliant actor will likely not survive, and it's commendable how optimistic he is.

Let's just hope John is in the 20% and kicks cancer's ass.
