A lot of the stigma surrounding trans people is a result of the thinking that they must have a penis/vagina/whatever to identify as a particular sex. [b]Allowing people to identify as whatever gender they like results in lower numbers deciding to have gender re-assignment surgery[/b].
I think that tight definitions of transgender should be avoided – allowing for the possibility of new identities in future.

I respect the choices of people but this seems a little off. Does he have a history of this behavior? Can his parents comment on the situation? If not I can't help but feel this is a drastic attempt to keep the focus on him.

shes been open about it for years on some sites (i think someone found her youtube sometime last year) but it looks like she didnt actually want to come out while she was the center of attention. coming out to the public after being sentenced probably seemed like the best thing, because unless she gets pardoned, her life is essentially over anyway

Emotional instability was part of Manning's defense.
More power to her, but I'd imagine that transitioning before going to prison of all places might be a bit difficult. (Granted one might be more well received.)

I wonder if the mainstream media will respect this request. They've been making sure everyone in America knows the name "Bradley Manning" and naming the case after that name. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't, lots of people will be unaware of this change and when they see an article in the future about Chelsea Manning, they might ignore it not knowing it is formerly Bradley Manning.

I get your point, but it could've been much better said. A middle ground would be nice. We need to not derail threads with transgender-related derailing, but at the same time, respect the rights and wishes of transgendered individuals.
With that said, Manning has a lot of balls to be doing this kind of thing in prison, and I got a lot of respect for him already. However, I'm sure he won't be in general population, so we shouldn't be too worried.
