Some of this will probably be embarrassing to say, but I have no doubt there's at least a handful of you out there who feel the same way and probably about some of the same stuff. I have a moderate knowledge of macro and micro economics. But I have no idea how to write a check. I know the history behind church rituals and formalities. I have no idea how to tie a tie for going to church. I can persuade a customer at my retail job to apply for my store's credit charge. I have no idea how to use a credit card or even what my credit score is (or how that is even figured out). I know many arguments to be pro-gun and anti-gun. I have only fired a rifle once, a decade ago and have no idea how to operate a firearm safely. I know all the irrelevant rules of the road. The science behind hydrocarbons. But I don't know how to change my oil (or pump my own gas, though that's not entirely my fault - I live in New Jersey) Some other things I feel dumb about not knowing- Cooking any kind of food without a microwave Washing clothes in a washing machine Hook a computer up to the internet Play any kind of instrument Sometimes I feel incredibly stupid for not knowing some the most basic practical things in life but a plethora of information around it. Anyone else feel this way about some things?
It's okay I'm sure lots of countries want to hire you as a military adviser.
Are you asking the internet if there are other people on here who feel they're smarter than other people but actually aren't? That's what the internet is.
Hang on, bare with me here what if you read a book on doing things
(or pump my own gas, though that's not entirely my fault - I live in New Jersey)
Wait; do people pump gas for you at gas stations in jersey? Are you saying you don't know how to pump gas into a car at a gas station? I wouldn't be surprised if this: "Sometimes I feel incredibly stupid for not knowing some the most basic practical things in life but a plethora of information around it." stems from the amount of easily accessible information on the internet. I wouldn't call it stupid to simply not understand things from lack of experience. I'd call it stupid to willingly not understand things and get pissed for not understanding them due to a lack of a desire for knowledge on whatever pertaining subject (for example, learning how to properly shoot a gun and gun safety)

In fact, you're not legally allowed to pump your own gas.
Cooking is easy if you want to try it. Just find a recipe and figure out what the ingredients are if you're a complete novice, then build it by the recipe. It'll probably suck the first few times but that's how you learn the skills you can't find in books or recipes.
Yes, people pump your gas for you in Jersey. In fact, you're not legally allowed to pump your own gas.
ive never understood this pants on head retarded logic/law when i go there
Sometimes the only way to learn something is to just give it a try.
"I have no idea how to use a credit card or even what my credit score is (or how that is even figured out)." considering that the algorithm behind your credit score is kept secret that's not really a big deal also credit card: buy stuff, pay off bill when you get it
Yes, people pump your gas for you in Jersey. In fact, you're not legally allowed to pump your own gas.
I learnt something today
wait you legitimately don't know how to wash your clothes? how are you even functioning in day to day life
Cooking any kind of food without a microwave Washing clothes in a washing machine
You mom probably did these for you, and maybe she still does.
Hook a computer up to the internet Play any kind of instrument
These kind of things need to be learned man, don't sweat it
When independent life hits you someday, you'll learn these basic skills quite fast.
Are you asking the internet if there are other people on here who feel they're smarter than other people but actually aren't? That's what the internet is.
"I am really smart (but this is why I am also very humble)"
This is just called not having any common sense
People learn things that are valuable to them. If you've realized that you don't know how to do all of those things and haven't put in the effort to learn them, then they simply don't mean that much to you (or mean less than the other things). Pretty much all of the practical things you listed are possible to learn in less than 30 min by google searching (other than cooking and playing an instrument, those just plain take lots of practice to get good at). As an example: If you all of a sudden were forced to wash your own clothes (I assume you don't), then it would become very important and you would quickly figure it out. My parents forced me to do many things, like washing my own clothes, on my own pretty early and I thank them immensely for it.
To be fair, all of the random knowledge in theory makes you a more interesting person, which is kind of more important than the basic skills that you can learn in minutes, being why they're called basic. With the cooking, computer networking and musical ability, they're all valuable, not necessarily common skills that take time to learn, don't see any issue with not knowing them - if you want to, just do it. They're easy to learn if you just put time in

Now, we should all be thankfull for Emperor Scorpious' selfless act of making us feel better about ourselves. Thank you, Emperor Scorpious.
Yes, people pump your gas for you in Jersey. In fact, you're not legally allowed to pump your own gas.
That's fucking incredible. I've never been anywhere where I didn't have to pump my own gas. Why is this a thing?
uh I guess i've studied pathology, physiology, microbiology, psychology, and some neurology for the last eight years and, as a hobby I've been losing interest in, computer programming with C# .net, but sometimes I forget how to do really simple things like tying a tie for work or change water filters. it's not really a thing worth bragging about - "i'm a genius on some things and an idiot in others" basically applies to everyone. everyone is really good at some things and really bad at other things.
That's fucking incredible. I've never been anywhere where I didn't have to pump my own gas. Why is this a thing?
basically it's a long standing law because when gas stations first came around they were worried about consumers pumping dangerous gasoline for some reason like 80% of the population wants to keep it
No, not only am I very knowledgeable in Literature and the Arts but I'm also a functioning Capital-A Adult. I think if you can skim through Wikipedia's article on "Esoteric Orthodox Prayer Miscellany" you could take the time to google how to tie a tie.
I know all sorts of useless shit, but I can't learn some math formulas. I hate that.
That's fucking incredible. I've never been anywhere where I didn't have to pump my own gas. Why is this a thing?
Jobs.
You mom probably did these for you, and maybe she still does.
First mother, then girlfriend. I never asked them to or expect them to. They just sorta...always did it for me.
So basically you like to memorize random facts to cover up the fact that you're actually pretty stupid?
Basically, yes. It sucks when I realize I do not know how to do a lot of practical things in life.
Now, we should all be thankfull for Emperor Scorpious' selfless act of making us feel better about ourselves. Thank you, Emperor Scorpious.
It is how it is. It's embarrassing for some of the things but I suppose if it makes you feel better, it amounted to something :v: [editline]9th May 2014[/editline]
Jobs.
I have a friend who works in Wawa and has both in NJ and outside. The way he explains it, there really isn't any kind of job creation because of how they manage the number of people per shift.
(or pump my own gas, though that's not entirely my fault - I live in New Jersey)
no excuse u vapid faggot ill travel all across my beautiful state 2 kill u my own fuckin self [editline]10th May 2014[/editline] op - HELLO I CANT WIPE MY ASS (encyclopaedic knowledge of how tp is made)
The title should really have been "Sometimes, I feel too street-dumb". [editline]10th May 2014[/editline] Don't worry, a lot of people are like you. They're called "customers".
First mother, then girlfriend. I never asked them to or expect them to. They just sorta...always did it for me. Basically, yes. It sucks when I realize I do not know how to do a lot of practical things in life.
Next time they do somethign for you that you don't know how to do, ask either for them to show you or for you to watch, so you can learn.
But I don't know how to change my oil
Read your car manual, or look for one online. It's pretty simple though, get your jack, lift up your car, take off the oil cap from underneath, let it drain, replace oil cap, fill (slowly) with new oil. Is pretty much how it goes.
Cooking any kind of food without a microwave
Find a basic recipe online, follow it, pretty much, . don't let it bother you if you can only cook from recipes either, some people can only cook from recipes, others can cook on the fly, either way is good.
Hook a computer up to the internet
Well, before you find yourself needing to do it for real, why don't you look it up online if you like learning things from reading.
Play any kind of instrument
Thats not neccesarily terrible, many people don't. Sometimes people click with instruments, some people just don't. Since you appear to like to read up online, do that to learn the things that you don't know. Dude, you have the biggest library in the world right in front of you (internet) use it.
