Edinburgh is the most expensive city in the UK for students to live and work in, according to a Royal Bank of Scotland survey. Above average rent costs plus lower than average term-time income made it the least affordable. However, Edinburgh students are still the highest social spenders and spend above the weekly average on alcohol. The cheapest Scottish city on the RBS Student Living Index was Dundee in 10th place, with Glasgow in 16th. Portsmouth topped the list of 25 as the most cost-effective city in the UK. The survey of 2,500 students across the UK took into account a range of factors including how much students spend on going out to how much time they spend studying. Edinburgh students pay an average of £112.05 on rent per week, compared to around £110 across the UK. In Glasgow, the average rental figure was £96.16, while it was £94.49 in Dundee. The survey found the majority of a student's income came from student loans, which on average were £161.14 per week. That figure was four times higher than any other source, including part-time work. After loans, money from students' parents was the largest income source. Only one in 50 UK students said they took fees, which Scottish students studying in Scotland do not have to pay, into consideration when deciding which university to attend. Other concerns such as subject choice, university reputation, distance from home and the cost of living were more important for 98% of prospective students.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-36904289
I have gotten incredibly lucky with my flats the past 4 years. Never paid more than £4200 a year and they've all been pretty good places. However most of my friends live in terrible conditions for flats that can cost a lot more.
Scots don't pay for university so it's not like they spend more compared to other students overall.
This also includes non-scottish students though Ruskin, who DO have to pay fees. Edinburgh's expensive as it's the capital city, but the rising cost of rent is becoming fucking ridiculous. You're going to be lucky if you're spending under £400 Pppm for a flat; I'm seeing 425 becoming the average now. Can't remember the exact report, but it stated that outside of London, Edinburgh was the most extortionate place for student accommodation. It's ridiculous that you can just go down the road to Glasgow and see that the cost of rent is almost 3/4 of Edinburghs. Flats are getting more and more expensive whilst the quality of them does not. Something needs to be done about, that's why a lot of people are campaigning for either rent caps or a regulatory body for it
Scots don't pay for university so it's not like they spend more compared to other students overall.
This might be worth considering if the payback of this didnt stretch over 30 years
Scots don't pay for university so it's not like they spend more compared to other students overall.
Except instead of paying for your education over many years and only when you're earning a certain amount you're expected to pay ~£500/month plus living expenses when you're a poor student trying to balance studies and working enough hours in your part-time minimum wage job to afford the high rent. And most students are forced into higher price areas (mostly central-- I know very few students/former students who lived more than 20 minutes' walk away from Princes St/Royal Mile) because most of the uni's are out of the way and hard to get to otherwise, or it's Edinburgh Uni and located right in town so you're much more inclined to live closer anyway, and there's little middleground between the nicer, more expensive areas and the worse areas which generally aren't even a whole lot cheaper, so it's either or. Maybe in the grand scheme not paying fees works out cheaper but for students at the time it is much more expensive.
Wait, so you don't get loans for rent in Scotland?
We get a student loan based on your parents' income to cover your living costs and rent as a whole. Like I get £621 a month but I live in Dundee so rent is cheap and life is good.
-lies-
The loans company automatically siphons money out of your bank account when you start earning £17k a year. So to say we don't pay for Uni isn't true, we just pay for it when we can afford it.
That is for the loans yes but not tuition fees with are covered by the government and never get taken back from you besides normal taxation.

Nearly went to Edinburgh; one of the reasons I didn't was because of how expensive it is. I honestly don't know how some people manage to get by with rent prices. It's also not the cheapest place for a night out, either.
All the Dundee Facepunchers should meet up if there's this many of us :v:
Landlords should really take a financial hit so students can drink more. It's not like property is expensive in Edinburgh.

If i was so dead set in trying to get into University, i'd be trying to get into Dundee.
Edinburgh's fun. Good place to be a student. Part time job is essential though (unless you want to live in a dump).
I'm going to dundee uni next year so this is good to hear.
In Dundee, if you manage to find yourself a space in a HMO with 4-5 other people, you can push your rent down to like £60 a week.
that's a shame, its the coolest city ive ever been to and i would love to study abroad there
Aberdeen - Paid 6K in accommodation in the last year alone. Literally homeless in 3 days. How the fuck am I supposed to live off 5.30 an hour, when they only give me 10 hours a week. I am honestly not enjoying my life right now.

Shouldn't you speak to someone about that
Yeah, I'm honestly surprised to hear that Edinburgh is the most expensive, rent is fucking ridiculous in Aberdeen.
Went to my uni to see if they had any rooms for me to move in to for the month of august (the longest I could stay). £126 a week, about £540 a month, the CHEAPEST they could offer. Even suggested I could go with Unite the Students, which only happens to unite them through dept and poverty. Honestly if I wanted to use shared facilities that badly I'd just take a shit in the back garden. This year has fucking killed me.
