Fifteen-year-old Cassidy Stay was the sole survivor of the tragic murder of her parents and four siblings in her family's suburban Houston home on July 9. At a memorial service on July 12, Stay recited her eulogy, quoting "Harry Potter" writer J.K. Rowling: "In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says, 'Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.'" Cassidy's words gained a lot of attention, including that of the famous author. This week, Rowling reportedly sent Stay a care package, which included a personalized letter purportedly written by fictional "Potter" headmaster, Dumbledore. Rowling's gesture has inspired a social media campaign to connect the popular author with the grieving teen, Today.com reported.
-snip, didn't read article, said accidentally tasteless joke-
It's always the thought that counts. This was a very nice thing to do.
Despite the heart-shattering mass murder that lead to it, that's adorable.

Imagine the thought that your entire family is now gone and will never ever come back and you are not alone in the world because of it.
Your mother, father and brothers and sisters are just gone and there's nothing you can do about it. Completely alone, totally afraid, no one wants you.
And then you learn that people care enough that even someone with fame sent you a care package, and it also happens to be your favorite author.
She went through all that and still managed to stand up and speak at the funeral? That is one ridiculously strong individual.
Imagine seeing your whole family murdered in front of you and knowing you were the only survivor even though you were shot two times. Rowling is cool, not really a fan of the books but her actions against fans is awesome. (wasn't Luna Lovegoods actress a anorexia survivor that contacted Rowling?)
When the fuck did it get dusty in here?
Right in my eyes...
Tragic. And tragically ironic that she is now "the girl who lived" analogous to Harry Potter himself.

Life has a very cruel sense of irony sometimes...

yikes
I think I'd be permanently locked up in a mental institution if I were in her situation

wow not only did she call 911 and could accurately describe the suspect right after he shot her in the head and slaughtered her entire family, but she didn't look particularly fazed during her speech at the funeral

I'd like to believe she is planning to live a long and prosperous life as a sort of way to honor the lives of every single family member that died.
I'd like to believe that.

I don't doubt she will, what a strong girl. At 15.
Unbelievablely strong. Go her.

that's a good way to tell the killer to fuck themselves
despite the obvious and extreme tragedy, live well regardless

Maybe it hadn't quite sunk in yet but she doesn't look like someone who's just had her entire family murdered.
Eh, people grieve differently.

Some people tend to joke and act casual when facing dire situations, it's a way to cope like any other.
I mean shit any time I learn a relative of mine has passed away I just shrug it off and move on. People cope with death in weird ways.

What if it was an inside job...
Watch as she becomes the president in a couple of decades.

I just read the original story
A guy who wanted to find his ex-wife barges into her sister's home and demands her location.
The sister wasn't there so he rounded up the children and waited until the parents got home.
When they didn't give him her location, he shot them all dead execution-style (with the exception of Cassidy, who played dead)
Investigators say Cassidy Stay saved her own life by deflecting the bullet with her hand. She reportedly lost a finger in the process, but it changed the trajectory of the bullet just enough so that it didn't do greater damage to her head.
After all this, the murderer decides to go to his ex-wife's parents.
Their lives were saved because Cassidy called the police.
After being shot and watching her entire family be murdered.
I can't believe how strong this girl really is. Seriously, if this was on Law & Order, I would laugh at how ridiculously unrealistic it was.
Kudos to JK Rowling for reaching out to her.
