A warm spell gripping the region has melted a staggering 46,000 square miles of ice each day so far in July. The vast amount is the same area as the state of Pennsylvania being lost every day, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado. If the same amount of melting continues throughout July it will be the fastest rate since records began in 1979. 'That's relatively fast,' NSIDC research scientist Julienne Stroeve told LiveScience. 'Unless things change in the next few weeks, we might have a new record for July. 'Certainly overall, we think the ice is thinner overall leading up to this season than it was in 2007. On July 17 this year, sea ice covered 2.92million square miles of the Arctic Ocean. The amount of ice cover is currently 865,000 square miles below the 1979 to 2000 average. The previous fastest rate of melting ice was in 2007. Researchers said that the melting and re-freezing of Arctic sea ice takes place with varying intensity each year. In Autumn as Northern Hemisphere temperatures drop, ice extends outward away from the land to cover vast expanses of the ocean. But in Spring as warmer weather arrived the ice begins to melt. Each year the actual amount of ice that re-forms in the Autumn has declined steadily. Researchers discovered that this year the ice began to melt between two weeks and two months earlier than usual, signalling a greater overall amount of melting ice for the entire year. The measurements took place in the Chukchi Sea, near Alaska, the Barents, Kara and Laptev Seas, near Finland and Russia. It is believed that the melting ice has been caused by warm spells sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere. Forecasters have recorded high pressure over the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska, since June, which has brought warmer temperatures to the entire Arctic. The high pressure has seen temperatures at the North Pole to reach 6C to 8C (11F to 14F) hotter than average. Stroeve said that clearer skies over the Arctic have also allowed the sun's rays to bake the sheets of ice which are usually protected by thick cloud cover. The ice expert added that cooler temperatures for the rest of July could decrease the rate at which the ice is melting. 'It's too early to say we're going to have a new record low but I would say it's certainly possible with the way things have been going,' he added.
This sucks, bad.
How much is there at the moment?
Cue everyone talking about doing something, then proceeding to not give a fuck. God bless Civilization.
we can't really do anything about it when we have the big industrial nations not giving a fuck. I mean. Danish Windmill-farms only do so much when we're only 1% of the worlds CO2 emission...
Meanwhile, American industry and politicians scoff at the thought of environmental preservation. As does most of the third world countries... for obvious reasons though.

About 46,000 Square miles less than there was yesterday.
i swear that there is somewhere where that much ice is also freezing

It seems people would rather develop gills than lose a few bucks. This will mark the first time for 5000 years that Humanity attempts to adapt to nature by relying solely on a 10thousand year process of evolution to happen within decades.

Waterworld anyone?
Mars is also heating up the same way Earth is. Global warming is mostly natural.
It absolutely is. It's a cycle. We have, of course, the Iceages and their intervals. But we also have lesser waves called (get this!) coolings and warmings. We're heading out of a cooling, into a warm period. As much as this is the case, CO2 is proven to contribute to the higher temperature this time. If you buy into Al Gore...
We should test this process by putting Atlanta under the sea.
Nobody would miss it. A better option, though, is all of New Jersey.
how is this news to anyone?
Sounds more like propaganda. Something in those results has to be skewed because that is a LOT of area.

I wouldn't count on this being entirely true.
Rule 34 on 46000 square miles of ice melting daily.
Rule 34 on 46000 square miles of ice melting daily.
How in the flying fuck could this be a rule 34?

Excuse me while I continue not giving a fuck.

But the polar bears!

Hasn't the average global temperature been falling since 1994?

the reason that image is cropped like that is because the lump of ice he's sitting on is right next to a much bigger lump of ice. i've seen the original image somewhere before. still though, a picture of a poor polar bear will spark a reaction in me, but i won't change my entire life just because of it. perhaps i'm just an asshole.

sort of related. worth a watch

Why does that make you think "Poor polar bear"? Maybe it's a small patch if ice and he's using it to his tactical advantage of hunting seals. Maybe he's just trying to dry off.
Also: About 10.4 percent of the world's land surface, or approximately 6,020,000 square miles (15,600,000 square kilometers), is glaciated. Glaciated means permanently covered with ice. That ice takes the form of glaciers, ice sheets, or ice caps.
That means in 130 days there will be no more ice anywhere. I don't exactly believe that statistic anymore.
Or maybe polar bears can fucking swim.

read my post again. that is exactly what he's doing. i wasn't talking about that one picture, i was more talking about the people going "oh but the poor polar bears are drowning" showing pictures like that one.
Who measures in area? You measure in volume, not area when it comes to ice cap melts.
Anyways, if the Daily Mail is correct, after fourteen days, an area the size of Greenland should be missing from the poles, by the end of August, we should have no polar ice caps. Either sensationalist misinformation, (it is the Daily Mail), gross overestimates, or I'm glad I live in the mountains.
This is not new, actually.
I'm sorry but that sounds like total BS. As mentioned before, that's a few Greenlands a month gone. Look at a map. Greenland's pretty damn big. If the Temperatures were that high to do that, everything that wasn't frozen would be on fire.

Here:
840,000 / 46,000 = 18.2[lots of numbers past this].
18 days is a little less than a month.
"Learn Math"
What?
Greenland is over 840,000 square miles. Learn math.
840,000/46000 = 1 Greenland gone every 18.26 days. So yeah, a couple every month.
