“Should California become a free, sovereign, and independent country?”
The question could appear on a statewide ballot in 2018 if a group of secessionists has its way.
Yes California has been pushing for the state to break away from the United States and become its own country for several years.
Marcus Evans, the vice president of Yes California, filed a proposed ballot measure with the Attorney General’s Office on Monday that would appear on the November 2018 gubernatorial ballot.
“We always thought that if we just connected with the people who thought about this, but didn’t tell their friends and family because they would be seen as kooky and weird, that the quiet population would become vocal,” Evans said. “If you don’t want to support our suggestion, that’s fine. Let’s just have the conversation and discuss the facts.”
The measure aimed at the 2018 ballot attempts to strike language from the California Constitution that says the state is “an inseparable part of the United States of America, and the United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land.” It also asks voters if they want to secede from the country.
If voters approve the measure, it would establish a special election in March 2019 to ask voters again if they want California to become an independent country, Yes California wrote in a ballot measure filing.
More than half of the registered voters in the state must participate in the special election and at least 55 percent must vote “yes” for the proposal to move forward, according to information submitted by the group. If voters approve the measure, “the governor shall carry and shepherd an application for the newly independent Republic of California to join the United Nations,” they say.
Yes California’s main argument is that California and the U.S. have conflicting values, and the state pays more than its fair share in federal taxes to subsidize other states. Meanwhile, he said, the state’s infrastructure is crumbling, schools are failing and millions of people live in poverty. Evans believes California, which would have the world’s sixth-largest economy if it were a standalone country, would be better off as an independent nation.

Should be interesting next few years.
Remember when liberals were mocking Texas for wanting to secede?
as if the U.S. is just gonna let them leave lmao
And most liberals will mock this as well.
Not sure, liberals always like to dish on secessionism, until they feel they won't be able to get what they want, then they go at it hard.
Look at Scotland, already talking about a second indyref.
So like that one time South Carolina tried the succession stunt? Because that totally worked out for them. Great idea fellas
California wouldn't be the worlds 6th largest economy without the US.
I thought it was legally impossible for states to leave the union. Am I wrong?
Look at Scotland, already talking about a second indyref.
Thats just the SNP mate. Believe me they do not talk for Scotland or me as they keep claiming.
Remember when liberals were mocking Texas for wanting to secede?
I will loudly mock this
it's a dumb idea that will go nowhere, as in the case of texas, it's only a bunch of dumbasses that think this is really a thing that could happen
I thought it was legally impossible for states to leave the union. Am I wrong?
They can't, like in a legal sense there's no way of leaving the US. These are just a bunch of butthurt kids who are mad their candidate didn't win.
This is just as bad as that one guy who wanted California to be 6 states.

It's almost like not all liberals thing the exact same way!
I find it funny how trumpets are always going on about how liberals should stop generalizing all of x group as *insert y bad thing here* and then we've got people like this doing the exact same shit just on the other side.

Here we go again with this stupid shit...
I'll repost my thoughts from the other thread:
I'm from California, and this is a bad idea.
Last time someone legitametly asked if they could leave the Union over an election they disagreed with, the awnser was a resounding no.
No, and the lives of 600,000 Americans.

States are very interconnected which facilitates a better economy overall. Interstate Commerce Act and all that Jazz. You are ripping yourself forcefully out of that system, its terrible for everyone on both sides.
Like I alluded to earlier, when you join The United States, its a permanent thing. We fought an incredibly bloody civil war partially to preserve the Union. There is no method for leaving, period.
If I remember correctly, there is a legal provision where they can split into 5 separate states if they wanted to.
And most liberals will mock this as well.
nobody hates liberals more than other liberals
Remember when liberals were mocking Texas for wanting to secede?
As a liberal in Texas that mocked secessionists I think that maybe they were on to something
If I remember correctly, there is a legal provision where they can split into 5 separate states if they wanted to.
That's Texas.
That's Texas.
Shit, I should've known that. Well in that case Jefferson state when?
Honestly, if they attempt this, I wouldn't be surprised if Jefferson statehood comes back online.
I thought it was legally impossible for states to leave the union. Am I wrong?
No, you are correct. This movement is just as ridiculous and stupid as the Texas one.
Thats just the SNP mate. Believe me they do not talk for Scotland or me as they keep claiming.
I live in Scotland and they don't speak for me either, but they do have an upsetting amount of support.
As a conservative, I support this 100%.
As a conservative, I support this 100%.
But conservatives in America like the constitution* which forbids it.
Also they won't leave. People speculating about California leaving are even sillier than those speculating about Texas leaving.
Cascadia when?

I know it won't happen, but i can dream of a California-less USA. :(
I know the rest of the Union hates California, with some understandable reasons, but there's no reason to let us go. Legalities and fesibliltiy aside, almost nobody I know would want this to happen. No one I know holds some sort of loyalty to California above the United States of America. Everyone is kinda laughing at this.
I live in Scotland and they don't speak for me either, but they do have an upsetting amount of support.
With them losing the last 3 by-elections i'm hoping for their downfall soon. Not to mention they do not hold a majority government right now (if only just). Certainly round my area in Fife the big grumble is buses and trains which they are failing majorly. Faster for me to sit in a car for 1hr and 30mins than get a train, walk then bus then walk to work.
This a bad idea, if California leaves successfully which is unlikely but could happen it will fuck UP the union as many other states will want to follow. With the NDP in Alberta retards over here want to split up Canada so if Cali leaving goes through and our economy gets worse I could see a surge in "we're better apart" attitudes.
I know it won't happen, but i can dream of a California-less USA. :(
California is like 14% of our economy and is one of the few states that actually gives the federal government more than the federal government gives it, so the US deficit would grow. And also so many huge businesses and talent are based there lol. I thought you wanted the US to be strong or something with your support of Trump, when really it'd just lose us a large chunk of our economy and leave us in a further state of indebtedness than before.
This is just as bad as that one guy who wanted California to be 6 states.
The 6 state thing is actually a good idea though.
