Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urges end to sanctions
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has urged the West to drop sanctions and treat Tehran with respect, during his inauguration speech to parliament.
MPs cheered as he said: "If you want an adequate response, you shouldn't speak the language of sanctions, you should speak the language of respect."
Mr Rouhani, 64, nominated a cabinet that included as foreign minister ex-UN envoy Mohammad Javad Zarif, a moderate.
The US said it would be a "willing partner" if Iran "engages seriously".
The White House said Iran should meet its international obligations and deal with international concern over its nuclear programme.
Mr Rouhani, a former nuclear negotiator who has worked as a diplomat for three decades, won a surprise victory in June's election.
He gained support from reformists by hinting at a more moderate stance than his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
In his speech, Mr Rouhani told parliament: "All of those who voted, whether they voted for me, someone else, or even if they didn't vote, all of them are Iranian citizens and have citizenship rights."
He said the people had voted "yes" to moderation and hope. He promised to advance women's rights and freedoms and to reduce the government's interference in people's lives.
He also said he would work to turn around the ailing economy, with inflation currently running at about 40%.
Most experts say the economy was grossly mismanaged under Mr Ahmadinejad.
But it was further crippled by sanctions, which stopped Iran from bringing in hard currency from its main export, oil.
Although Mr Rouhani is president, the final say on policy issues still resides with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
State news agency Irna reported that 11 foreign presidents were among those watching as Mr Rouhani took the oath of office in parliament, the Majlis.
That's like sweet butter in the world of diplomacy. Israel will be a problem though.

Israel acting like spoilt retards when Iran trys to show change and cooperation will only make the USA realize how retarded Israel have actually been throughout the years.
Except they aren't a "liability." Iran is a large and powerful country. Not to mention it isn't riddled with terrorist organizations. Maybe if the US could stop trying to screw Iran over and every possible turn we could have positive relations with a Muslim country in a very destabilized area.
it really won't
muh, muh religion and holocaust look to keep the us in love with israel for a few more decades
Pretty much. This retarded foreign policy won't change until the old guard gets replaced by new faces in the Capitol.
Stop making nukes and threatening Israel then sure.

Perhaps Israel should put down its own nukes before it demands that no other countries have them.
"I'm a moderate! I promise! It's okay you can lift our sanctions, we won't try to build nuclear weapons or anything!!"
We don't NEED Iran. Leave them where they are. We don't need more liabilities.
Hey, fuck you. What are we Iranians to you, some kind of tool that you can throw away? Is that how you see everybody else?
You think people walk around like puppets yapping about how great nukes are?

How about your people apologize for holding hostage an entire embassy staff, threatening to kill off an entire country, ostracizing those who believe in something other than Islam, and for calling our country the "Great Satan". We're all willing to sue for peace but ya'll need to start taking bigger steps, and that includes having a bit more tolerance for people with different perspectives, for starters.

How about you apologize for ruining Iran's democracy in the 50's, replacing it with a monarchy. That is fucking straight up imperialism. Then the west, led by the U.S. supplied Saddam with chemical weapons and the needed infrastructure which were then used to kill thousands of civilians and Iranian's. If there's a great Satan today it is definitely the United States of America.
please settle down guys you're making jesus cry
this is exactly what satan wants
This is one of the biggest diplomatic messes in history.

When Iran equipped Hezbollah to overthrow the Lebanese government and fight the Israelis in the eighties, was that not an act of imperialism? When the fanatics and lunatic followers of the Ayatollah overthrew the government of Afghanistan and established an Islamic extremist state, was that not a case of Iran spreading it's own influence?
You claim that the United States, a country on the other side of the fucking planet, wants anything to do with your fucking country. We don't. We want NOTHING to do with Islam, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. NOTHING. The fanatics attacked us, and we simply responded. You want to blame all of us for the actions of corrupt politicians, fine. Yet you fail to look at the other times in history other nations have done far worse imperialist actions, the Ottomans who enslaved hundreds of thousands to millions of people and killed off millions more in early 20th century genocides, the Belgians who themselves killed millions during the colonization of the Congo, and England, who created concentration camps in South Africa that later inspired the German ones.
We tolerate enough of your fucking bullshit, when we spent and continue to spend billions of dollars and our lives to see that you all live with basic human rights - something all too obvious that you don't want for anyone you disagree with, meaning anyone who doesn't accept your fucking religion, looks different, speaks a different language, lives in a different country, the list goes on. Whatever, perhaps you all don't deserve it and are better off drowning in your prehistoric, barbaric dark age mentalities.

Please tell me you are joking? Because if not you are the most ignorant fuck that I've ever seen on this forum. I'm not even religious you retard. I don't believe nor care for any religion, people are free to believe what they want, but spewing bullshit pisses me off.
Because the actions of a few people means that everybody who originate from that same place are involved, right?
So all Germans are Nazis yearning for the day when the third Reich will rise again.

What in the ever loving fuck is wrong with you. Seriously? The Iranian president says he wants to talk and you flip shit about people from Iran not accepting people who are different? I don't even like him myself but he is the best of a bad situation.
Have you ever, and I really do mean EVER spoken to an Iranian or just about anyone else from the middle-east? The bad apples are the ones that make the most noise but clearly you have nothing but pictures of talibans running about in your head. I am stunned, please tell me you are joking. PLEASE.
My family lives in Sweden, I'm born here. The only holiday from Iran that we celebrate is new years which is a little different and that is nothing religious. My mom decorates our house more than your average Swede around Christmas. We sit down and have a nice Christmas ham just like everybody else, we have a Christmas tree. Why? Because we adapt. Get your head out your ass and stop seeing us all as the same.
I perfectly welcome diplomacy with Iran. It's about time we start cooperating and began dealing with the bigger issues. Radicals on both sides are the folks that make the headlines, we shouldn't forget that. I'm tired of the Islamaphobia here in the States.

right because how do we know that iran's democracy wouldn't end up like iraq's democracy? if anything they are better off today in that respect, having a working goverment is better than one ruled by an iron-fisted dictator

this guy is a step in the right direction, but ultimatly the president is little more than a figurehead, the real ruling class hasn't ruled in

The funny part is that a lot of Iranians hate Islam as well, yet Iran is portrayed as full of muslim terrorists just waiting to bomb america.
