Okay so I want to get some questions answered, if you have the time I'd appreciate it. I would post it in the WIP thread but it's all synth and dubstep, and as usual I feel like this takes up less space then posting it in an already crowded thread.
A. How is the volume? Too quiet? Too loud after the build?
B. Do the harmony guitars work when split stereo? Should I keep them together?
C. How do you think the drum VST is working for the song?
also pls dont mak fun of guitar solo. It was really cold in my house and my fingers were frozen, it's just a placeholder since I'm probably not going to end up finishing this song any time soon.
guitars should be a little big louder, lower the bass volume
Well, aside the intro it sounds pretty good.
For the intro:
-the drum: it's very out of the spirit of the song (for the intro), I think. You should add more riffs and stuff : it needs to be excited since the beginning and not when your solo comes...
-the bass: if you want to do a metal song, put your bass line on every beat or two notes per beat, it will probably sound better.
-the keyboard: I wouldn't have done it like that. Leave the theme to the guitar for the beginning and try this when the bass line comes: C G (these notes in every beat until the solo)
Answers of your questions:
A. Very good the volume.
B. I don't mind it.
C. Great but only after the intro.
I won't talk about your solo, but it sounds awsome.
Great job! I'm waiting for the complete version now!
About the keyboard, that's actually because this is a song I wrote to only be played on piano (it sounds really cool haha, much more jumpy, very swing) and I decided to try a metal version, so I made a mock up on my loop pedal and really liked it, and it went from there. I charted out the piano part last night because I didn't have my guitar rig with me, and today I did all the guitar parts but didn't think about getting rid of the piano. I'm probably going to cut it out of the mix entirely in the next version, or have a section with just the piano somewhere in there. Also cheers for actually knowing the notes and the key haha.
For the drums, I have something in mind that would probably work better. Now that you mention it, I see your point, it isn't the best fit.
Pretty awesome. I didn't think the intro was too bad. Bass is a bit on the loud side, though it's a welcome change from all the metal that has the bass totally drowned out. Is there a rhythm guitar track? It would definitely thicken up the song with some straight-up power chords or some root-note-chugging in the back, but that's kinda already taken up by the eighth notes on the bass.
Personally, I would change the bass to quarter or half notes and replace the eighth notes with rhythm guitar, if that makes sense.
A. Volume is good.
B. Keep them split.
C. Drums sound good. The bass drums in metal are usually heavily EQ'd to make them "click" more in order to have them cut through the mix. You could try doing that in order to make them more prominent. The snare sounds great though.
Really good though, overall. There aren't a lot of metal musicians on this forum so it's good to see a change from all the electronic stuff. I'd like to hear the finished version of this.
Did you mic up a cab, or was this direct input into some guitar amp vst? Either way, I like the recording quality.
The intro sounds like some 80's detective show, but everything else is spot on! The solo could maybe come up just a little in the mix, or perhaps the other guitars should come down a tiny bit.

Yes, once the heavy riff kicks in there is a rhythm track chugging away with mostly palm mute 8ths, the usual metal riff, it's mirroring the bass and it's a little harder to hear, but I can pick it out if I listen for it. And, I would cut the bass to quarters or half, but it really helps to drive the song. I'll turn the rhythm up and the bass down if I ever do another mix though, which should help a lot since I'm hearing there's too much, and they're both doing 8ths so I don't think it should hurt anything.
And I can look into the EQing on the bass, but I didn't want to shift too much towards the metal "omg nothin but doulbe bass bro" and EQ it as close to a metal kit as I could. And, I didn't want to use the VST as a crutch so I'm only writing drum parts as difficult as I can actually play, so if someone ever magically appears with a 7 piece drum mic kit and a 16 track console I can get out of VST entirely. I think I accidentally went off on a tangent, but yes I'll try and EQ them with some more treble.
Also thanks, I also wish there was less electric music on the forums, people like Yurko and Schmoe are some of my favorite posters (given, Schmoe is technically electric, but his genre isn't)

No, straight USB input into computer with a Digitech pedal with custom effects presets.

Yeah, I'll probably turn the harmony guitars down for the solo then, I'd though it was a bit too loud though haha.
Honestly, this sounds like a Impellitteri song. The mixing sounded fine to me also.
Holy shit this is awesome. If I was into this kind of music I would love it. Heck, this wasn't even really metal, it was more rockish.
Ergo, I don't know Impellitteri and it'll take me a few days to stop being too lazy to look it up, but as long as it's a band that you don't hate thanks haha.
ifaux, thank you :D And yeah, I never really know what genre to call my music, it's always different. My brother told me the intro sounded like some kind of noir music, and then transitioned to Iron Maiden. And it's a real compliment that you can like the music even though you don't like the genre haha :)
Thanks to both of ya.
It's you playing guitar, right? I want to get into guitar but I don't know where to start :s

Start by learning canon rock :v: that's where I started....
But, yeh, start by learning standard chords. Try to learn some theory, that'll help you in the future for when you want to improvise and make songs. Then try to learn songs you want to play, I think that is a good motivation source for further playing.

I like this tune very much :3
reminds me a bit of something from F-zero
Did you double track the rythm guitar?

No, just one track for rhythm, it's 1 for solo, 2 for harmony, 1 for rhythm and 1 for bass (which are mimicking eachother). Also, that's awesome, I love F-Zero haha

It might just be because I'm always a contrarian, but I disagree. I have never studied theory yet I write a song every week or two (generally not intentionally, I just screw around with instruments) and can improv without issue. You do need to learn the chord progressions in a round about sort of way, but you certainly don't need to learn how to play chords unless you're interested in learning how. Basically, just look at some songs you like, look up the chords and look at the pattern until you can say: "Okay so it starts on this note, moves down two half-tones, moves down another two, then back up two, and starts over." The key to writing songs is basically the chord progressions, after a while you'll realize that most songs use similar progressions, and all you have to do is pick a one and write a good enough top layer that it doesn't stand out.
EDIT: Oh, and you need to learn the pentatonic scale (google). It's basically a scale that you can adjust the root fret (the lowest one) and it'll let you improv over ANY song EVER. I still have not found a song that I can not find a position for the pentatonic scale where I can improv and be in key. Seeing as how there are 12 scales and 12 frets, it works out pretty well. And, once you're comfortable with that you can add in the major/minor notes in the key and everything will be just dandy.
But honestly if you want to learn to play guitar, just pick the genre you like and buy a lesson book for it or look up some guitar tabs (Youtube clips are also great for teaching you little tricks and techniques for things you can't really describe on paper), if you're passionate enough you can motivate yourself to learn really quickly. . I spend a good 30-60 minutes playing piano every day, and up until recently I did the same with guitar. I'm not like focusing hard core, just noodling and experimenting and having fun (which is the most important I'd imagine) and after a while you just start getting it. I have a ways to go but that's how I got to where I am now, just play ALL the time.
Oh, and guitar hero/rock band can help too. I could play guitar hero on expert before I picked up a real guitar (back in like 2007 or 08) and it really helped me with picking, it made it a lot easier to transition the muscle memory to metal picking. AND playing drums on rock band is basically exactly like playing real drums, just not as hard (it also keeps the tempo for you) and it's re-arranged a bit.
Tl;Dr: If you REEEELY want to learn to play, the only thing stopping you is procrastination and possibly lack of funds.
Lack of funding is what's got me stuck. :c
Lack of funding is what's got me stuck. :c
Well, can't help you there haha. Just don't be afraid to settle for a crappy first guitar, once you decide you like it then you're free and clear to buy a nice one.

Open a lemon stand :v:

You don't really need much at all to start. Just get a starter guitar and amp. If it truly is your passion, you'll come up with ways to generate funds for future equipment, trust me :v:
this song is so weird for me, the intro sounds like some song I've heard on the radio that I can't think of, then the first main part sounds like something from a Sonic the hedgehog game and I don't like the first 3 notes of the solo, they sound odd to me. but the solo was simply awesome, the riffs are nice and jumpy but the intro and those 3 notes are the only thing really bothering me.
Don't worry haha, I re-recorded the entire solo and it's a good deal better. I don't think the intro was my best decision, but the rest of the song, I'm okay with. Thanks though, not much of a sonic fan anymore but I remember a few games had decent music.
