HEADS UP: This is about making the music/beats and MAYBE rapping over them later. Now, I didn't even listen to rap until a year or two ago, and since, I've been hooked. My biggest influence is Kanye West (hurp durp fuck off), my favorite CD is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. As I'm sitting around, I'll tap a beat out and think of it in my head, I even write here and there to go along with them. I have the inspiration, the ideas, but there's one problem. I have no fuckin clue how to work the technology. I've experimented with FL Studio 9 and found that, not surprisingly, it's difficult to use. Wading through oceans of downs-syndrome Youtube tutorials, I havent found anything amazing to help. I did stumble across the Akai MPC 500 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBeij6xqlek) and it seems like something that would help me, but there's no way I'm paying $300-$500 for equipment to use when i cant use the software yet. So, guys, where do I turn?
You invest time into learning how to use the DAW. The only answer, no quick way out. You could have gone with an easier DAW, so if you are just using a trial or something I can give you some suggestions of DAWs that are a bit easier to use. If you already bought it, just learn out to use it. You'll get it eventually.
FL Studio (Fruity Loops) is extremely powerful. Hopsin (underground rapper) uses FL Studio and he has some kick-ass songs. I think if you can learn your way around FL Studio you'll be set.
I am an avid FL user- got like a million GB in VST plugins. I have dabbed in almost every genre- however hip-hop seems to be one of my favorites. Mah youtube has some stuff and I make beats all the time. Never really do they surface though.
Alright, I'll keep on trying to learn FL then.

A lot of your stuff sounds like you just ran midi files through a bunch of expensive vsts.

If you find FL hard to use, you're going to HATE using an MPC. I've worked with nearly every audio program in some way, and most hardware used by rap producers, and could never quite get the hang of using my MPC. It's not hard, per se, more frustrating. I found myself interfacing ProTools more than I did my MPC. I felt limited using it, in fact, the only thing what was robust was sample chopping (which Slicex or almost any other program can do even more precise nowadays). Go get yourself a Maschine if you really want that MPC type interface. Otherwise, get FL studio, then get some drum kits (or make your own), and experiment.
