As the title describes, has anyone noticed the decline of quality in television?
I saw the thread about spongebobs decline in quality but I didn't want to steer the topic off course so here's a thread dedicated to this topic.
I actually don't watch any TV shows anymore due to the decline of quality. I'm not a fan of spongebob so I didn't notice but as mentioned above there are viewers upset with the quality of spongebob. I myself is extremely disapointed in the simpsons. The simpsons' hey-day truley ended after 1999 (Season 10) in my opinion. I use to be such a simpsons fan I had seen all the episodes multiple times ... now when I tune into the simpsons it's always an episode I have never seen before, the reason being ... I no longer care. Watching the new episodes is like watching a brick wall, no emotion, not funny, not sad, doesn't make you angry, smile or frown, I just stare at the screen. I just wonder if the voice actors know this, but if they did, I don't think they'd care, they're getting paid for it - more money. Honestly if they came to their senses and cancelled the show due to bad quality, I won't care either anymore, the quality has been down the drain for 10 years, it's far too late for me to get the same feeling I did for the show a decade ago. The sayings "quit while you're ahead" and "Don't push your luck" didn't get through into their heads.
What confuses me is that the creators act like they're still as popular as ever! For the 20th birthday of the show, they interviewd the creators, they're all in denial, one of them said "America lets you know when they're sick of something so we're doing pretty good" - or something along those lines. Has he not noticed the decline of viewers and their comments on the show? Matt Groening said "I don't think we'll ever run out of ideas, and even if we did we wouldn't stop" -hearing that was terrible.
The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Fresh prince of bel air, cosby show, spongebob, Futurama etc ... these were the shows that made television. The Golden Age of television was between the mid 80's to early 2000's.
With Futurama back in production, it brought a thought me. Bringing back Futurama was a dream come true ... but seeing as it's being revived in the era of declining quality, I hope it too isn't made of poor quality. I wasn't impressed with the 4 movies so I won't be suprised if I'm not laughing.
Does anoyone still enjoy television? Has anyone noticed this decline? Are all your favourite shows going down the drain too?
I don't have one :D, but yeah, when I am at a friends, it's always shit.
I don't watch much TV, usually just football or Sky Sports News.
I find it funny that I only ever watch television shows on my computer.
I only use my TV for watching documentaries and whatever I get from the library. Oh, and Doctor Who when the CBC is running it.
I only watch NBC's Thursday night line up (The Office, Parks and Rec, Community) and The Daily Show/Colbert Report. And recently the World Cup. Other than that, I can expect 4 minutes of commercials for every 10 minutes of actual show, so I hate watching television.
I didn't think people watch TV unless it's for something they're really into such a sports or news - I'm into documentaries myself. But the days of "Oh man I'm missing my favourite show" are over. Well to my knowledge anyway.
These days the only reason I even have the TV on is to have some noise in the background while I'm on the PC. If I want to watch something I usually do it online. Hell, I only really pay attention to the TV when I turn the Discovery Channel on.
bitch ass OP, before you talk shit about my beloved TV,
just turn onto HBO and you will see.
The BBC is just as good as ever if not better :smug:
Dexter has a new season coming in september, that's a show to watch.
The only channels I pay any attention to is G4, VH1 Classic, Discovery, Science, History (International), Reels and Food.
I can't even watch G4 anymore.
You are just watching the wrong stations. Spongebob? wtf
What about LOST (just ended, still counts), Dexter, Breaking Bad, Fringe, Justified, True Blood, South Park, The Office, House, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia????
South Park and Top Gear come to mind. Yeah maybe it lost quality on average, but not everything has turned bad.
TV is old media
TV is a fixed time of airing
I'll let you guess what is going to overthrow it
Oh and Mythbusters.
The cause of TV's decline in quality is two-fold.
Firstly, TV is now available to a huge audience, owing to how cheap the machine is. Initially, when the TV was just invented, only the better-off families could afford it, and they expected good quality programmes. If the writers didn't deliver, they'd find something else.
Now that the masses have unbridled access to TV, writers (the few who still exist), don't need to produce high quality stuff, because the viewers don't care and/or wouldn't understand. I apologise for making a sweeping generalisation here, but the majority of people are not particularly bright for numerous reasons, and owing to human nature choose not to operate out of their comfort zones.
The second reason is money. Greedy corporations take advantage of not needing to produce decent quality stuff to make more money, as we've seen with the rise of reality TV, such as Big Brother and the general stupid antics of most MTV programming. Reality shows are a godsend for corporations, because they don't need to pay writers, actors or directors, and don't even need good cameramen.
That said, a few decent shows come out once every now and again, such as as Lost, Prison Break, Metalocalypse etc. but the majority of written and acted shows are similar to Friends. Badly acted, badly written, full of mediocre one-liners with horribly predictable plots. Unfortunately, most of my mates think the world of Friends, so I generally chew through my tongue whilst watching it. It's far less painful.

I like discovery channel. It is good enough for me.
Used to follow shows such as Stargate: Atlantis and stuff... I never watch TV now though. I mean, sometimes I watch a documentary or so, but I don't follow any shows or anything.

What.
All the commercials nowadays are annoying as hell(well the rent a center ones are kinda funny).
The totino's one ruined that Kids of America song for me.
That science channel one with the Silver Lining song gets old really fast, and that goddamn Large Dangerous Rocket Ships commercial is just annoying because of the voices.

The science channel also wore the hell out of that Morgan Freeman one, I swear they showed it like twice every commercial break.
I've tried to find YouTube links for the other commercials I mentioned but I can't find them.
The only shows I like to watch is Xplay, Attack of the Show, The Daily Show,
The Colbert Report, Dual Survival, and Mythbusters.
Yeah that's pretty much it.
I sense a storm of angry LOST and Joss Wheadon fans

This.
I totally agree with this. Televisions are pointless these days.
IPTV is the future.
