BusinessInsider highlights an upcoming story from Bloomberg stating that a UK Judge has ruled that Apple must publicly state that Samsung did not copy the iPad design for its tablets. The public statements by Apple must be carried out in two ways:
• Apple must post a message up on its website
• Apple must post this message in British newspapers
The report says that Apple must leave the notice up on its website for six months. Details about the notice in British newspapers are currently less clear. We will update when Bloomberg’s report with more details becomes available.
Justice has been served. (kinda)
-derp-
That's crap, they didn't post on their website that the design was copied, why should they have to post the opposite?
Settle the lawsuit, fine whoever is nescessary, and move on.
Looks like they're being brought down a notch.
Well, that's kinda dumb. If you have to fine them somehow, do something that's, you know, actual punishment?
Come to think of it, why is Apple being punished when they're the plaintiff?
Fucking dammit, they're going to pick the newspapers.
To me it doesn't seem like they have a choice, but have to do both.
they should get samsung to make a big splash page in paint, and force apple to use it on their website for a few days

Because Apple have publicly accused Samsung of stealing their IP and have dragged their name through the mud. This is simply a public applogy. Its quite common here for judges to require this to happen.

For wasting court time perhaps? Its the same as Oracle having to pay Googles legal fees. Apple have taken up a large chunk of the courts time to deal with this complaint that in the end has come to nothing.
Not to mention there is possible damage to Samsungs image, which is what this is mostly about.

They've been running some pretty discourse on Samsung, and I find this to really be the best punishment. Imagina a tab on apple.com saying "how Samsung didn't copy the design of the iPad" - would be pretty funny. Will probably just be a small note at the bottom of the page.

Perhaps they were counter-sued?
Can't they overthrow this decision somehow? This looks like the kind of thing Apple would hate doing, paying fines is one thing, they just sell a couple of iPhones and they're good, but this delivers them a strong moral blow they can't overcome that easily.
It might only be on their UK site.

It's probably sick but I would have loved to know Steve Jobs' reaction to this, considering how obsessed he was with crushing Android

Probably but still bad enough

To be honest for me this has damaged Apple's image by a million, and made samsung look like badasses

No they have to do both.
5 words that describe Apple: If you can't innovate, litigate.
Because when you lose a lawsuit you have to pay damages, and in this case the judge decided that part of the damages was done to Samsung's public image, which has to be fixed by publicly stating they were wrong.

Oh I misread. :v:
Weren't they sending letters to stores saying not to sell it even after the ban was reversed?
Or was that a different country/product/legal battle

It was the US I think.
They should also have to write "I will not abuse patent laws" 200 times

iirc Apple was trying to get one of Samsung's products banned and even after the judge overturned it they sent the letters
I forget the details because all of these cases start to blur together in my mind

Probably for defamation
