Expect lots of close-ups on delicious food. The show itself has subtitles, sadly the trailer does not.
Yup, this is certainly Japan. I guess they decided to add samurais for shits an giggles, but I certainly don't see the point.
So this is Chef, except it's a Japanese show with samurai...?
-snip-
It's like they just brainstormed everything related to Japan and put it in one show
I'll check this out. As an assistant chef/foodie I'm loving the idea of just going around to random stalls in Japan and chowing down on Katsu & Udon. The Samurai/period bits seem to be there for comedic value, although I'm not sure how well it'll translate for an American audience since their sense of humor tends to differ from ours in a lot of ways. Kindof reminds me of all these taped Japanese Soap operas my grandmother has on VHS from forever ago for some reason.

It doesn't rely too much on Japanese tropes and requires very little knowledge of the culture in general. Even if you're just looking for food porn I'd definitely recommend it.
Kindof reminds me of all these taped Japanese Soap operas my grandmother has on VHS from forever ago for some reason.
my wife watches a lot of korean dramas, and historical crossover stuff wasn't an uncommon theme. I feel like lost-in-time warriors (and modern people lost in feudal times) are a pretty common trope, so this doesn't seem out of place
NETTOFRIXE!!
Food and a Samurai? I can dig it.
Just watched the first three episodes. It's very charming. I really love how simple the show is. The food scenes are great and make you hungry, the main character is a lovable old guy who just wants to eat good food and he comes off as very sympathetic. Definitely a good change of pace after so many dramatic shows I've watched.
Just watched it. Apparently this is based on a manga which explains the weird inclusion of Samurais. After knowing that, yeah it is quite obvious that this is based on a food manga from the way everything is presented
